Who practices yoga in the United States? According to PR Newswire, the recently released Yoga Journal “Yoga in America” study indicates that 8.7% of American adults practice yoga. Of those practitioners, 82% are women, and almost 63% are between the ages of 18-44. Website Statistic Brain adds that 71% of practitioners are college graduates and 44% earn more than $75,000 per year.
With another 44% of Americans interested in trying yoga according to the “Yoga in America” study, can you envision yoga being available to everyone, no matter what ethnicity, age, education and income? Denver yoga teacher Tyrone Beverly and his organization Im’Unique have just this vision.
Beverly founded Im’Unique in 2012 to unite the Denver community and promote healthy lifestyles through “yoga instruction, cooking classes and healthy living workshops.” “People do not need another gym. They need a community,” Beverly told Floodlight in the December 5, 2012 article “Holistic Health in Unlikely Places. “. . . We can show that health is for all people regardless of the color of their skin or the depth of their pocketbook.” Im’Unique is also forming partnerships to promote healthy lifestyles in other communities including New York City, San Diego, Atlanta and Houston.
By partnering with Denver’s cultural facilities to offer free yoga classes, Im’Unique’s Illustrating Union Yoga Tours have succeeded in providing the most diverse yoga classes in all of Colorado. In addition to 2012 classes at Denver’s zoo and museums, Im’Unique attracted more than 100 participants and thousands of observers for their October 20, 2012 wellness workshop at the Walmart Super Center in Stapleton. According to the Im’Unique website, Walmart cleared away clothing racks “to make room for yoga mats.” The wellness workshop included yoga and healthy cooking classes conducted in English and Spanish.
Illustrating Union Yoga Tour dates for early 2013 have been announced and include a return to the Denver Zoo, with free yoga classes on Tuesday evenings in January. In addition, classes will be offered at the Denver Art Museum on Saturday mornings in February and March, and at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on Tuesday evenings in April and May. Dates at the Wildlife Experience in June and July will be announced.
