NBC television personality David Gregory created a firestorm of controversy when he defied DC’s Gun Laws and brandished a high capacity magazine on last weeks episode of “Meet the Press”.
We now know that members of his production staff contacted the DC Metro Police to get permission to obtain a magazine and illegally import it into the District of Columbia for use as a prop on the show. When their request was flatly denied, they claim they supposedly got permission from an unnamed contact at the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. ATF’s supposed mystery man hasn’t been named but if he really exists, I doubt he’s willing to step into the spotlight.
I suspect that David Gregory’s ego just got the better of him and he just decided to obtain a magazine anyway and the DC Gun Laws be damned.
After all, those laws don’t apply to people like him. Those laws are meant for the little people who would otherwise cling to their religion and guns.
It appears that he bit off more than he can chew not only for himself but for NBC and members of his production staff as well. You see, those pesky gun control laws really do make Gregory’s actions illegal. Even for David Gregory.
The sad thing is that while David Gregory’s ego has gotten him into legal jeopardy, I doubt that the mess stops there. There are others involved who are equally guilty.
I doubt that Gregory personally drove over to Virginia and bought a high capacity magazine and brought it back into the District of Columbia to use as a prop in last Sunday’s segment. I seriously doubt Gregory even picks up his own dry cleaning so I think it’s a pretty sure bet that he ordered one or more of his staff to obtain the magazine for his use.
This is where it gets ugly. Some poor schmuck was probably ordered to obtain the magazine and passed it to an intermediary on the show production staff who then provided it to the David Gregory.
That’s what is otherwise known as a criminal conspiracy.
Yes, really. This mess has progressed past the theatrical grandstanding of a self-important TV personality and is now a full fledged criminal investigation. There are others now involved and the snowball continues to grow as it rolls down hill.
The DC Metropolitan Police have stated that the matter is under investigation. One must assume that any competent police investigation would first secure the evidence and then establish the chain of custody of the illegal item and establish exactly who was involved in the illegal importation of the prohibited magazine.
If DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier has any integrity, all the parties involved would be charged and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. That means David Gregory and everyone who touched the magazine or participated in the plan to illegally obtain it and import it into DC.
The laws are supposed to apply equally to everyone after all. At least in theory. In numerous previous cases, the Metropolitan Police vigorously enforced the DC Gun Laws citing a Zero Tolerance Policy on guns.
I suppose that David Gregory could cowboy up and take sole responsibility. He could plead guilty and accept a brief jail sentence and being added to the District’s Gun Offender Registry. That would require him to register with the Chief of Police every six months and to be monitored by the authorities.
I don’t think that is likely however. I seriously doubt that David Gregory has the cojones to step up and cover for his staff and accept the full responsibility for the willful violation of DC Gun Laws. After all, he’s too important. I suspect that if anyone suffers, it will be the low ranking staffer who was following orders.
The real question remains.
What action will DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier take?
Will she treat David Gregory’s willful violation of DC’s Gun Laws as the crime, no wait… criminal conspiracy that it is?
Or will she give in to blatant political corruption and reveal that the much heralded “Zero Tolerance on Gun Crime Policy” does not apply to the Liberal elites and is only applicable to the unwashed masses?
