Judge and fan favorite Shawn Johnson was at the center of this week’s controversy on Season 15 “Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars.” The Olympic winning gymnast performed an intense Samba that irritated head judge Len Goodman. The show aired Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
The show was divided into two halves with each contestant performing a classic ballroom routine with their partner and then a Latin number with two partners. The trio dances brought in a second professional to dance with the couple and required more intense choreography and coordination. Shawn scored well on the ballroom number and split the judges on her trio dance.
Shawn and partner Derek Hough did a Viennese Waltz meant to honor veterans for Veteran’s Day. All three judges had nothing but praise, calling it heavenly perfection and rich in depth. Head judge Len Goodman called it poignant and gentle. Shawn scored a nearly perfect 30, save the 9.5 from Len which left her with a 29.5 for the routine.
Next, the pair was joined by Mark Ballas for their trio number, a tribal Samba to Les Tambours du Bronx song “Jungle Jazz.” Complete with wild tribal costumes, makeup and drums, the trio gave what was arguably one of the best performances of the evening.
The judges were split in their opinions with Len saying it lacked Samba content. Bruno Tonioli agreed but said as art, it was fantastic. Carrie Ann Inaba disagreed saying the Samba portion was perfection and that you have to take risks to stay on top. The scores reflected the judges’ feelings as Carrie Ann awarded the trio a 10, Bruno a 9 and, in what was the most surprising score of the evening, Len gave them a 7!
Do you agree that the dance qualified as a Samba or not? If you aren’t sure or missed it, you can find it in the video on the left side of this article. The low score may have an impact on Shawn’s overall standings. Scores from last week are being combined with this week’s scores, giving Shawn a total of 93.5. When he gave his critique, Len warned Shawn, “If you’re eliminated tomorrow night, don’t blame me. Blame these two,” as he pointed at Mark and Derek, the choreographers.
Here is where the other six competitors rank:
Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani: 99
Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough: 93.5
Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy: 92.5
Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke: 92.5
Gilles Marini and Pet Murgatroyd: 92
Apolo Ohno and Karina Smirnov: 91.5
The couples face a double elimination on Tuesday as the season moves toward its end. While Kirstie Alley has repeatedly wound up at the bottom of the leader board, her fans have pulled her out every time. The race is too close to call. Who do you think will be sent home?
Southern Illinois fans can tune in on ABC’s channel 3 WSIL at 7 p.m. on Monday nights each week for the competition and on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for the results show.
