The first night of finals on “Dancing with the Stars” ended with Kelly Monaco surprisingly in second place. Odds have been on Shawn Johnson to win and Melissa Rycroft to take second but after a routine that displeased judges, Shawn fell to last place, leaving the door open for Kelly. During the week 10 episode of “Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars” which aired on Monday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m., Kelly and partner Val Chmerkovskiy danced two close to perfect routines that left them poised to finish well.
The first routine was a repeat of a dance they couple performed earlier in the season. The pair, which is rumored to be linked romantically, chose to redo their Paso Doble because it was the first time Kelly showed real confidence on the dance floor. The couple might have earned a perfect score had it not been for a missed grip during a movement where they missed grasping hands. They received a 9.5 from Judge Carrie Ann Inaba and 10s from Head Judge Len Goodman and Judge Bruno Tonioli for a total of 29.5.
Kelly’s freestyle was choreographed to “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” from “Dirty Dancing” and seemed to sum up the actress’s feeling about her time on DWTS. The routine incorporated an aerial element from Kelly who was serenaded by Val on the violin. They also brought in a choir and the troupe of dancers to highlight the performance. Carrie Ann called it a beautiful love story while Len said it lacked originality. Carrie Ann and Bruno awarded 10s while Len gave them a 9.5. They earned a 29.5 for this dance too, giving them 59 out of 60 for the evening and a second place finish.
Melissa and Tony ended the night with a perfect 60 while Shawn and Derek earned a disappointing 57..
On Tuesday night’s final results show, Kelly and Val will have to perform an “instant dance,” wither a Jive, Cha Cha or Samba to a song they will be given at the last minute. The judges’ score for this will be added to Monday night’s scores along with viewer votes to determine the season 15 All-Star champion.
Do you think Kelly performed well enough to win the mirror ball trophy on season 15 of “Dancing with the Stars?” Tune in Tuesday at 8p.m. to find out.
