The finals on “Dancing with the Stars” is about taking risks and the risk Shawn Johnson and partner Derek Hough took may have cost them the championship. Their whole season has been about taking risks and going into the finals, Shawn was favored to win but could her decision to repeat a dance the judges scored her low on cost her the mirror ball trophy? During the week 10 episode of “Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars” which aired on Monday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m., Shawn and Derek performed two crowd-pleasing routines that left them surprisingly at the bottom of the leaderboard.
The first routine was a repeat of a dance they couple performed earlier in the season. Derek suggested the couple’s Quickstep. Shawn initially had reservations because the judges penalized them for not having enough Quickstep content and for breaking hold throughout the dance. Ultimately, the couple opted to repeat the dance without making changes in order to please the crowd. The judges expressed disappointment that the couple chose to break the rules again and the scores reflected it. They received a 9 from Judge Carrie Ann Inaba, am 8.5 from Head Judge Len Goodman and a 9.5 from Judge Bruno Tonioli for a total of 27.
The second routine, the highly-anticipated super-sized freestyle incorporated Shawn’s fellow competitors from the U.S. Women’s Olympic Team as background performers. The routine relied heavily on gymnastic moves but also incorporated a variety of dance steps taken from throughout their season performances. The judges were far more impressed with this number calling it both flawless and explosive. Shawn received a perfect score of 30 for the routine, giving her a total of 57 for the evening.
Melissa and Tony ended the night with a perfect 60 while Kelly and Val earned a 59.
On Tuesday night’s final results show, Shawn and Derek will have to perform an “instant dance,” wither a Jive, Cha Cha or Samba to a song they will be given at the last minute. The judges’ score for this will be added to Monday night’s scores along with viewer votes to determine the season 15 All-Star champion.
Do you think Shawn performed well enough to win the mirror ball trophy on season 15 of “Dancing with the Stars?” Tune in Tuesday at 8p.m. to find out.
