As the title of this recap points out, it is the freestyle round of the “Dancing with the Stars” finals that usually picks the winner. Sure, last night Kelly Monaco, Melissa Rycroft and Shawn Johnson picked their favorite dances of the season to display one more time, but overall, it was the supersized freestyles that really got the crowd going. So which freestyle blew the competition out of the water? Well read on to find out.
As we stated in an earlier article, if Kelly wants to win the mirror ball (which has been blinged out), she would need to emphasize the incredible chemistry that she has with Val (who went speedo-less this time) and overall grace and sex appeal, that way any technical mishaps (such as in her Paso for the first round) would go unnoticed. Val also would need to pull a few tricks to outdo freestyle king Derek if he truly wanted Kelly to stand out. Boy did he ever. The opening acrobatics were stunning and well done by Kelly, and the pair lit up the floor together once they got going. Plus, extra swoon points go to Val for busing out the violin. Unfortunately, the dance had a been there, done that feeling, which could hurt them overall.
Like Kelly and Val, Melissa and Tony really needed to up the wow factor for the freestyle. Tony’s track record (including his hip hop routine with Melissa) in the freestyle round has been very spotty, so he really needed to dig deep for this one. You know what? He did, and the results were spectacular. Tony wisely went for a contemporary feel, which showcased all of Melissa’s strengths. It was spectacular from the get go, and certainly won’t be easily forgotten.
Although their rule breaking earned pitiful scores earlier in the night, the freestyle allows the dynamic duo to do what they do best. Shawn and Derek decide to include the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team, which seems a bit unfair, since they probably would not have come for any other couple (at least not on that night.) The routine is what you would expect from Shawn, bouncy, fun, and full of tricks. Although Len said it was unexpected, it still felt pretty expected, right down to the flips both Derek and Shawn did at the end. Kudos though for flip off of Derek’s shoulders, which had us screaming in delight at the TV.
