CRKT (Columbia River Knife and Tool) is world renowned for its knives for hunting and tactical purposes. What you might not know is that they make some great tools for the techie in us all.
We got a hold of two of the newer offerings;
· The Guppie
· The Zilla Tool
They say tools can not be technical. They never met these two.
First of all is the Guppie. Do not let its name fool you. It may be small, but packs a whole lot of usefulness. The adjustable wrench jaw opens to 1/2″ so you can use it for all kinds of light repair and assembly jobs. The blade which is a Razor-Sharp edge, is made from high carbon steel and can be opened and closed with one hand using the blade slot. It comes with a removable which is also a high-intensity LED light. It has two strong magnets to hold it securely to the Guppie’s left side. The stainless steel clip will hold the Guppie in your pocket or on gear
There are two other advertised (By CKRT) uses that are believable, but were not tested.
1. The Guppie makes a great little money clip, too, for those who like to keep a thin wallet. (do not take that wallet on a plane)
2. The Guppie carabineer will open bottle caps and metal jar lids.
The Zilla tool is more formidable (in name only) and just as useful. It comes in its own belt sheath. CRKT calls it a “Monster Tool”. I call it useful as (insert expliive). It is extremely easy to grip, with a comfortable ergonomic handle that fits easily in either hand.
The pliers jaws are spring loaded. They have both fine flat and circular toothed gripping surfaces. Near the base of the pliers, is a very useful wire cutter and also a notch near the handle for wire stripping.
You can store the two screwdriver hex bits in the Zilla-Tool’s handle reliefs. It also accepts other standard hex bits.
To open the knife blade quickly, just press the thumb blade, which also acts as a blade guard when the blade is open.
The stainless steel clip will hold the Zilla Tool in your pocket or on gear or you can remove it, if you want to use the included nylon sheath with belt loop and Velcro closure. Again, just like the Guppie, the Zilla-Tool can open bottles too, using the end of its pliers handle.
Whether you are a true techie, a wannabe or a tinkerer. These are two tools you should not be without.
