As a warm-up in preparation for Colorado Christian University’s trip to Anchorage, Alaska this Friday to kick off the 2012-2013 season, CCU made the trip down I-25 to take on the Air Force Academy in an exhibition game Sunday, November 4.
The Cougars hung around in the game and posted a respectable 64-53 score in the loss to the Falcons. The Division I hosts from Colorado Springs were a pretty good prep for the AT&T Alascom Jamboree the Cougars head into play November 9.
CCU shot 47% from the field in the first half. This stat included 50% from behind the three point line. The Cougars rode this early hot shooting to an 8-0 lead before Air Force went on a 16-4 run to overcome CCU’s early lead.
CCU tied the score at 49-49 with 7:37 left to play when junior Kyle Weaver connected on a three pointer. Air Force ended with the eleven point win as CCU would only score two more times before the final horn.
Head Coach Kevin Lubbers was pleased with the performance of his Cougars and said:
I was encouraged by our level of commitment and the buy-in to what we are trying to do. We did some really good things tonight and also found some things we can get better at. We’re certainly encouraged and certainly nowhere near satisfied.
Michael Brown led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points. Kyle Weaver and Michael Stamer added 10 each for CCU’s other double digit scorers.
The Cougars led the Falcons in rebounding with Stephen Dennis grabbing 7 of the Cougar’s 35 rebounds. Michael Stamer pulled down 6 of which 3 were on the offensive end.
