Can there be anything more grotesquely contemptible than the deliberate, cynical exploitation of murdered innocents in pursuit of a political agenda? Perhaps there can. If, for example, most of those murdered innocents were young children, such behavior could reasonably said to be even more execrable. And if the political agenda being pursued is one that attacks a Constitutionally guaranteed fundamental human right, and mandates that more people be rendered defenseless against the same kind of evil that murdered the children, then we are talking about conduct so vile as to call into question the very humanity of he who is responsible for it.
Astoundingly, Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) is so devoid of honor that he openly advocates this exploitation of the murdered children of Newtown, Connecticut. From the Washington Times:
Mr. Nadler was asked whether the Newtown tragedy could be the turning point in many Democrats’ longstanding struggle to enact stronger gun laws.
“I think we will be there if the president exploits it, and otherwise we’ll go on to the next” incident, Mr. Nadler said.
When Nadler’s colleague Carolyn “What’s a Barrel Shroud?” McCarthy (D-NY) introduced a magazine ban bill within hours of the Virginia Tech massacre, it would have been reasonable to conclude that McCarthy had taken such exploitation to its lowest possible level. Reasonable, but wrong, Nadler shows us.
In a way, you have to be grudgingly impressed with his honesty. In the same interview, he gave some more advice to President Obama (emphasis added):
“These incidents, these horrible, horrible incidents … are happening more and more frequently. And they will continue to happen more and more frequently until someone with the bully pulpit, and that means the president, takes leadership and pushes Congress,”
He openly admits that his agenda is one of “bullying.”
McCarthy’s 2007 bill shows that Nadler is far from alone in his eagerness to exploit the dead for the forcible citizen disarmament agenda–we have talked about it more than once. In fact, this is not even Nadler’s first time sinking to this level. After the Tucson shooting that left six people dead, and Representative Gabrielle Giffords very seriously wounded, The Hill quoted similar vulture-like sentiments expressed by Nadler:
“The national climate has to change,” he said.
Asked when it will, Nadler responded, “When the kid in your town gets killed.”
And now he has his pile of dead kids, and like Rahm Emanuel, he does not intend to let them go to waste.
A little harsh on Nadler? A bit unfair? Perhaps–we are all familiar with the aphorism, “All is fair in love and war.” And “war” is precisely what Nadler is calling for, according to Salon:
New York Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler called for a “war” on the National Rifle Association in light of the mass shooting in Connecticut today in an interview with Salon, saying the gun lobby group is the “enabler of mass murderers.”
He also wants to “stomp on” the NRA:
And we’ve got to stomp on them instead of kowtowing to them.
Interestingly, he has in the past condemned “inflammatory speech,” and implied that it can play a role in triggering atrocities like the Tucson massacre. From CNN:
U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, said he hoped that inflammatory speech will subside in the wake of Saturday’s shootings.
. . .
“Whenever you have violent political rhetoric, there could be some nut who will take up and reach a conclusion that the speakers didn’t want,” Nadler added.
Curiously, though, he seems not to have uttered a word of criticism of those now explicitly calling for the murder of NRA members and leadership. Or perhaps that is not so curious–he is the one calling for “war,” after all, and war tends to involve killing.
It is somewhat puzzling that he seems to believe that he will be on the winning side. We do have the guns, after all–and the will to use them.
You want a “war,” Nadler? Here’s some free advice.
