This Veteran’s Day, a woman whose unimaginable disrespect for the safety of others gets a punishment that seems humorous to many. Like something out of an action movie, impatient driver, Shena Hardin, reportedly drove on the sidewalk and across the entrance of a Day Care Center to avoid stopping for a school bus for over a year before she was caught. Her punishment was to stand at the corner of Superior Avenue and East 38th Street holding a sign that read, “Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid the school bus”, a $250 fine and a 30 day license suspension. This after a school bus driver videotaped her “The Fast and the Furious” re-enactment with police waiting on the other side. Ms. Hardin reportedly refused to apologize for her behavior and when asked about the matter simply smirked and lit up a cigarette.
Many believe that her sentence is a light one. It is felt by many that her reckless behavior and utter disregard for human life and the law constitutes a much stronger sentence. However, Ms. Hardin will not likely soon forget the humiliating yells, photos and stares from passers-by as she slouched against a fence trying to hide her face behind a big hat and equally as big sunglasses holding what is now being called “the idiot sign”. Ms. Hardin seemingly tried desperately to think of anyone she could text to keep her eyes from meeting any of the eyes of the dozens of people perched around her. In spite of differing comments on whether she has been punished enough, today’s weather issued a little punishment of its own.
With temperatures barely reaching 40, light snow and 64% humidity, a quick and comfortable punishment is not what she received today. And tomorrow won’t be much different. Ms. Hardin and all of Cleveland can look forward to the possibility of sleet and temps remaining around 40. Despite a chilly start, the week will progressively get warmer by Saturday with a high around 50. This high will hold until at least Monday but the nights will be around 36. By then, Shena Hardin and her “idiot sign” will be a memory- or at least, so she hopes. And maybe she will think twice before playing a Vin Diesel stunt-double around a stopped school bus again.
Here’s your chance to weigh in: Do you think that Shena Hardin’s punishment was enough or should she have gotten a stronger sentence? Send your comments below.
