The last day for Priority Mail for Christmas delivery is Dec. 21, 2012. Since the holiday falls on Tuesday, Americans are asking, “Is there mail delivery on Christmas Eve, or Christmas Day?” and “What time is the post office open on Christmas Eve, December 24?”
According to Doug Kyle from the US Postal Service, on Thursday, Dec. 20, that Friday, Dec. 21 is the last day Priority Mail will get to its destination by Christmas.
“But you may have to pay what I call ‘the price of urgency’.” Kyle stresses, “Priority Mail (December 21) starts at $5.15. Saturday, (December 22) Express Mail starts at $18.95.”
WJTV News Channel 12 reported Thursday, Dec. 20,
“But choosing the expensive Express Mail option comes with a money-back guarantee your package will get to its destination by Christmas.” “We will deliver Express Mail on Christmas Day,” says Kyle. “So those items you bring in Saturday afternoon at 1:45, if necessary, we’ll deliver it on Christmas Day.”
Also, ABC News reported on Thursday, Dec. 20, bad weather across some parts of the United States could make travel and mail delivery for Christmas rather tricky. On Thursday, Dec. 20, Doug Kyle reported,
“There are 17 states that have inclement weather forecast, so we’re keeping a very close finger on the pulse of what goes on there, and we’re going to try and do the best we can.”
That’s certainly good to know! So the answer is yes. The post office WILL deliver on Christmas Day if necessary, but for a hefty price!
The U.S. Post Office is Closed in R.I. on Christmas Day 2012
According to the USPS Post Office, Christmas is an official United States federal holiday, and a U.S. postal holiday. The post office is therefore closed on Christmas Day, and mail will not be delivered on Tuesday, Dec. 25 in Rhode Island (with expensive exceptions as noted above).
Because Christmas is a federal holiday, all post offices are closed, not open, in the Providence, Rhode Island area. This includes not only mail delivery to your Rhode Island residence or business, but also local post office lobby hours as well. The post office will reopen the day after Christmas, Wednesday, Dec. 26.

Most Rhode Island post offices will have an abbreviated business day on Christmas Eve and close early, some by noon. It’s best to call your local post office before venturing out. The mail carriers will do their best with delivery before they end their day.
Customers will have to wait until their local post office reopens on Wednesday, Dec. 26 to conduct business again. Mail delivery will also resume on Wednesday as well.
