It feels like the Fall winds just started blowing, but in reality we are only days away from what some consider Winter’s beginning. With it expect cold(er) temps, unmanageable snow and weeks of non-stop Christmas music. It all unofficially starts during the second helpings of pumpkin pie and the tryptophan hangovers on Thanksgiving night, when many shoppers sharpen their teeth at the thought of getting their Christmas shopping done early and cheap with the dawn of Black Friday the following day. Then it’s just a matter of time before we’re opening gifts and shaking our heads at our credit card statements. Why not enjoy a night of the stuff that makes Christmas so magical before the weight of the reality of the holiday season really gets out of hand?
With a length of 55 feet, weighing in at 10,000 lbs and perched atop the Woodward Fountain, Detroit’s Official Christmas Tree is located in Campus Martius Park and its official tree Lighting Ceremony has become an important event in the rise of a city looking to show that it too (much like many other big cities across America) can have its own “Miracle on 34th Street” moment. This year’s tree lighting event takes place on Friday, November 16th with an official start time of 5:00 pm EST. From 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm, there will be live entertainment and ice skating, including a “Skating Spectacular”. Channel 7 WXYZ TV will be live broadcasting from 7:30 pm – 8:00 pm with the event capping off at approximately 8:00 pm when Mayor Dave Bing appears on stage to officially turn on the lights to Detroit’s Christmas Tree.
In addition to all the activities going on, Fountain Bistro, which is located just steps from the site of Detroit’s Christmas Tree, will be serving food and drinks all night. Expect Fountain Bistro’s indoor area to fill up quickly so if you want to secure a seat inside, or anywhere outside for that matter, call ahead prior to the event to secure VIP tickets. Don’t let the likelihood of crowds scare you, as there will be plenty of standing room available to see the big moment and expect Fountain Bistro staff to be offering food and beverages throughout the park all night long. Also, following the tree lighting, Fountain Bistro and Campus Martius Park will be hosting Christmas Wonderfest in the Park. This event runs for two weekends and will feature ice skating, a Christmas Marketplace, and the incredibly festive atmosphere of Campus Martius at Christmastime.
