The notorious red-soled shoe designer, Christian Louboutin, debuts a men’s boutique in Los Angeles this month. On the successful heels of the first U.S. men’s boutique opening in the chic-chi New York Meatpacking District, the new men’s shop is across the street from its sister store on Robertson Boulevard.
The Experience: The store contains four distinct retail spaces created from above by an arcade of vintage window frames suspended from high ceiling, and from below through the use of different flooring finishes to further define the salons. The floors transition from rich cobbled leather tiles crafted by artisans in Mexico, to the deep red, striated signature men’s carpet framed by a geometric rawhide border. The opportunity for customers to create their own personal pair lies within the Louboutin “Tattoo Parlor.” This parlor offers shoppers the freedom to add a unique touch to their favorite pair of Louboutins. Personal tattoos or one chosen from Louboutin’s designs, are expertly translated into bespoke embroideries, to create a one of a kind shoe.
The Gift List: Just in time for the holidays, the boutique’s selection of men’s accessories will be the largest on the West Coast and will offer a wide range of styles to cater to the functional and aesthetic needs of the modern man. The designs range from the new Louis Junior low top sneakers, offered in mixed fabrics and embellished with studs, to the classic silhouette of the Bruno brogue with an unexpected touch of neon for Spring. Since the introduction of men’s accessories last fall, the offerings in this category have grown significantly to include a variety of travel bags, such as the as Maurice bowler, perfect in size for a weekend getaway, to small leather goods including the new Alexis document holder and Paros wallet.
The Diggs: Designed by New York-based architecture firm 212box, the West Coast Christian Louboutin men’s store is expertly laid out with geometric, Basaltina stone tiles to create a herringbone pattern, while two august Cyprus trees frame either side of the entrance. Inside, meticulous details of rich materials crafted by artisans from around the world are used to create a masculine retail environment. As seen in the men’s boutiques in Paris and New York, diamond-paneled leather walls, hand-embroidered with various shoe patterns from Louboutin’s own designs, offer a luxurious background to display the designer’s red sole creations. Pleated, turquoise leather wallpaper created by 212box, adorns the walls behind the signature men’s metal circle displays. Additionally, laser-cut white cowhide crisscrosses decorate the wall behind the cash desk to form a puzzled patchwork.
