On Sunday night’s edition of The Last Word, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews implied that Romney’s response to Obama’s “revenge” comment was racist.
“President Obama asked his supporters to vote for revenge,” Romney said. “For revenge? Instead, I ask the American people to vote for love of country,” he said.
At first, Matthews had no idea what Romney was talking about.
“Where did that line come from? What’s the antecedent to that? Where’d it come from?” a furious Matthews demanded of guest host Alex Wagner.
As we reported last Friday, Obama made the remark while speaking to supporters in Springfield Ohio.
“No, no, no. Don’t boo. Vote,” he said. “Voting is the best revenge.”
After Wagner explained this to Matthews, he attacked Romney, implying that his response was racist.
“This might have to do with having robocalls by Donald Trump,” he said. “There’s been a bad side to the Romney campaign. He can go out there and talk sweetly about bipartisanship, but behind the curtains when no one’s looking, of course, he’s Donald Trump’s best friends. He’s putting people out there, Sununu, out there to talk the dirty talk, the ethnic stuff.”
“This talk about revenge is of a piece with that,” he added.
So now, according to Matthews, Romney responding to Obama’s call to get revenge by voting is racist. Throughout the campaign, Matthews has redefined absurdity by claiming that practically every word uttered by Republicans is somehow rooted in racism.
The network also published an article calling Romney’s response a “new eleventh hour attack line.”
“The strategy appears designed to stoke enthusiasm among conservatives, by playing on existing far-right criticisms of Obama, including the notion that he harbors race-based resentment against America,” MSNBC reported.
A post at Twitchy notes that conservatives on Twitter took the far-left wing network to task.
“I see you’ve given up the pretense of being unbiased,” tweeted “Pam Swan.”
“This is why no one takes you seriously,” added “Stevie J. West.”
“How stupid do you think we are?” asked “Charles C. W. Cooke.”
Twitchy observed that one conservative on Twitter had “a good idea” for her own, possibly racist, revenge.
“I may have to watch @msnbc for the first time EVER tomorrow night. Watching the #Obama water carriers writhe in agony will be my own revenge,” tweeted “Jennifer.”
