It’s a big weekend for putting on the Ritz to help homeless pets in the Chicago-area with both PAWS Chicago and Heartland Animal Shelter holding their annual galas. There’s also Stories for Strays for kids, a wine and book event for The Puppy Mill Project and several great events to raise funds for Chicago’s cat rescues. Here are the details of the many fun events in the works.
Friday, November 9
A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter in Naperville will be holding it’s monthly Stories for Strays program from 6 to 8 p.m. Children 4 and up may be dropped off for cat and dog themed stories and craft time (3 and up need a caregiver). The event is free and this month, participants are encouraged to bring pet food for the shelter’s canned food drive. Learn more online and reserve your spot in advance at StoriesForStrays@hotmail.com
PAWS Chicago will hold it’s Eleventh Annual Fur Ball starting at 6 p.m. at the Drake Hotel at 140 East Walton in Chicago. Tickets are $400 per person and $100 per pet. Learn more online.
The Chicago Cat Rescue will hold a thank you party and fundraiser from 8 to 11 p.m. at The Store at 2002 North Halsted in Chicago. The event is to toast the help the rescue has received from Mid-North Animal Hospital. Tickets are $20 and include appetizers and drink specials with proceeds benefiting CCR’s medical fund.
Saturday, November 10 and Sunday, November 11
The Chicago Pet Show will be held at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. The show will include many area animal shelters and rescues and will also include pet demonstrations. Admission is $7 for adults and kids under 18 and adults over 65 are free. Saturday, November 10
The Wet Nose Pet Food Pantry will have a distribution from 10 to 11 a.m. at Eagle Storage at 555 Rogers Street in Downers Grove. Details and applications are online. Since distribution is limited to the first 10 to 15 families, it pays to be there early.
Ruff Haus Pets will be hosting an adoption event for One Tail at a Time from noon until 3 p.m. at the store at 4652 North Rockwell. The rescue will have several adoptable dogs on hand looking for new families.
The Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk will be held at Valparaiso University’s Fitness Center to raise funds for Help A Vet Get a Pet starting at 2 p.m. 2×2 Rescue will be on site with adoptable dogs. Registration is $10 in advance and $15 the day of.
Heartland Animal Shelter will host its Sixth Annual Golden Paw Gala starting at 7 p.m. at Crowne Plaza at 2875 North Milwaukee Avenue in Northbrook. Advance tickets are $75 per person and $25 per dog and will increase $25 each at the door. There will be a doggy spa, fabulous prizes and auction items and more.
Bridie McKenna’s Irish Pub at 254 Green Bay Road in Highwood is the place to be from 7 to 9 p.m. for Words, Wine & Wags supporting The Puppy Mill Project. Teresa Rhyne will be on hand for a reading of “The Dog Lived (and So Will I) and Chris Kern from the Forgotten Grape will do a wine tasting. Tickets are $30 with space limited to 75 guests.
Sunday, November 11
The holidays are right around the corner and the first of the many holiday fundraisers kicks off Sunday at the Morton Grove Animal Hospital. Photographer Jim Czerwinski will be on had for pet photos with Santa Claws and Hannakuh Hound (with tons of time to turn them into holiday cards). The event benefits Adopt-A-Pet.
Chicago Pet Rescue is hosting a free networking event at Chicago Canine Academy at 4930 West Belmont Avenue from noon until 3 p.m. Stop by and mingle with your friendly dogs and meet new people, eat fun food and learn more about pet adoption and a variety of pet products and services.
Perry Dog, Chicago’s newest online dog product retailer and designer, will have a casting call and fundraiser for the Anti-Cruelty Society from 3 to 6 p.m. at Chicago Party Animals at 1133 West Fulton Market. Tickets are $10 per person and $5 per dog (only dogs under 30 pounds.
