This week’s episode of “Supernatural” finds the boys and Castiel investigating an unusual death in Oklahoma City where a young man’s heart has literally jumped right out of his chest.
The episode begins with Castiel turning away from his fellow Angels and determining that the best way he can continue to help people is to become a Hunter. He provides the case out of Oklahoma City which Sam and Dean agree to investigate. Castiel attempts to take the lead in the case, but fails miserably and finds he has a lot to learn about conducting investigations.
While on the case, a series of deaths take place in the area. Sam and Dean realize that all of them are cartoon-like in nature. (One man steps off of a roof only to suspend in midair momentarily before falling and a security guard takes an anvil to the head.)
Sam, Dean, and Castiel dig a bit deeper and discover that the deaths are tied to items stolen from residents of a local nursing home. They visit the home and realize that one of the residents is Fred Jones (played by Mike Farrell of M.A.S.H. fame.) He not only happens to be an old hunting contact to Sam and Dean’s father, but he also has powerful psychokinetic tendencies; in this case he’s unwittingly altering his surroundings to a cartoon-like state. Hospital Administrator Dr. Mahoney realizes this and is exploiting Mr. Jones’ abilities for his own gain.
A bit of cartoon-like fun commences before the story wraps and the “bad guy” is killed; bits like the use of black holes that allow the robber to enter and exit the bank and a hit in the face with a frying pan.
So much more is revealed in this episode. Among the new items revealed:
- Castiel feels guilty about the destruction he caused in Heaven when he took in souls from Purgatory (including the Leviathan) and appointed himself the new God at the end of S7. As a result of his actions thousands of Angels were vaporized. He feels he can’t visit Heaven again as he’s afraid that seeing the destruction he brought about might cause him to kill himself.
- Castiel has a “new power” where he can teleport himself and others into another person’s mind.
- Castiel is still being summoned by Naomi to the mysterious “White Room” in Heaven. She tells him, in no uncertain terms, that he will not return to Heaven unless she calls him. She continues to return him to the present with no knowledge of his time in the “White Room.”
- Sam, as revealed in numerous flashbacks, moved into a home with Amelia. They arranged a dinner where Sam and Amelia’s father would meet. After a tense start to the evening Amelia’s father finally began to relax around Sam. Shortly after Amelia received a phone call advising her that her husband Don didn’t die in Afghanistan.
So what did you guys think of this episode? Did you like the cartoon effects and the tribute to cartoons of the past? Did this serve to derail the season or was it a welcome change from the dramatic story line? Is there anything that you feel wasn’t touched upon? Are you satisfied with the Sam/Amelia story line or is it getting stale? Let me know by commenting below.
