Call of Duty has a huge impact on sales with the release of a new game come fall of each year. The Call of Duty franchise has kept to its formula over their last five games they have released with new elements in every game that either frustrate or improve the beloved franchise’s fan base. “Call of Duty Black Ops 2” is no exception to that same formula that has been Call of Duty, but the innovations that have been made are much more ambitious than all the other games before it. “Call of Duty Black Ops 2” has three modes, beloved Zombies, an innovative action packed campaign and a new system of multiplayer.
Zombies has come a long way from just being an Easter egg for beating the campaign from when it first appeared in “Call of Duty World at War”. Zombies has evolved into a reason to buy the game alone. The formula has stayed the same ever since the first map, but the improvements in “Black Ops 2” have substantially improved the game mode. There is now a sort of Zombies campaign, TranZit, which has the player building tools that help them move around the map and also taking a ride on a bus with an automated driver. The map is the biggest Zombies map ever. The next innovation was another online mode called Grief. Grief is a mode that pits two teams of four players on small maps, which are part of the larger TranZit map, to fight against each other in a last man standing fashion. Grief is interesting, but it could be improved.
The campaign also has made some significant changes with the ability to make choices that shape the story throughout. There will come times throughout the story where a player will be forced to make choices that will change the story in minute ways but adds the feeling of player controlled shaping that adds replayability to see other outcomes. The addition of Strike Force missions was also a new innovation, which allows you to take control of a small force of navy seals and drones to complete a mission from an overview. They will affect the story but are not required to beat the game. The missions are easy to complete if the player uses his or her skills by first person control, but the lack of the AI ability makes it nearly impossible to complete from bird’s eye view only.
Multiplayer has been the franchise’s biggest money maker and the thing that most players look forward to upon the game’s release. “Black Ops 2” has not fallen short of the franchises well-oiled multiplayer formula and has made a huge impact on the way other games make their multiplayer. The newest innovation, and probably the biggest, in “Black Ops 2” is the pick 10 class making system. This system is meant to allow a player to choose items for classes that fit their play styles. The system allows the player to go into a game with nothing but perks, a knife, and grenades or with tricked out primary and secondary weapons and no perks. The system is sure to impress any player. The other major innovation is league play. This allows players the chance to place themselves in a ladder that you only move up in by winning games. There will be seasons that allow you to rank in your ladder and climb the rankings to strive for the best. All create-a-class items will be unlocked in this mode also to allow fair choice of weaponry. Other smaller innovations are the new game modes, Hardpoint and Multi-Team, and cod casting which allows a player to go back and commentate on game film using his, or her systems mic. Multiplayer will be a extensively played feature of the game.
“Black Ops 2” is a great game that Call of Duty fans will love, and it may pull some of the less enthusiastic Call of Duty players into the great experience they’ll have with this fast-paced first person shooter. The game is sure to get praise from other players and will be a must have for gamers on all the holiday sales.
