The burning of the Man and of the Temple at Burn 2 in Second Life® has been rescheduled. They will now happen this weekend instead of last weekend as originally planned. These are both popular events that happen happen only one weekend each year.
The Man will burn on Saturday November 3 and the Temple will burn on Sunday November 4. So that people in all time zones around the world will have an opportunity to take part, both burns will happen three times each time (all times are SLT/PT): 4am, noon, and 8pm. It’s important to get there early because the sims fill quickly, however. On Saturday the Elko sim and on Sunday the Rabbit Hole sim will be closed for an hour before the burn to prepare. If you come early, make sure you’re not in a sim that’s closing or you will be bounced out and will lose your place.
Second Life members can teleport to the Man by clicking maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Burning%20Man-%20Black%20Rock/2/132/24 and to the Temple by clicking maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Burning%20Man-%20Black%20Rock/6/252/25. These links will take you to a nearby location in an adjacent sim to avoid the problem of you teleporting to a sim that’s shut down in preperation for the Burn.
Both events are modeled on the Burning Man events that take place in the Nevada desert every year. Burn 2 is an official regional Burning Man event, and is run by the same organization that runs the Nevada event.
After both burns, the Lamplighters will be dancing and drumming, as always amidst displays of fire. It’s always an exciting time, and visitors are welcome to join in. Disclosure: this writer is a Lamplighter. The photograph accompanying this article is from a prior year Burn, showing one of the many avatars tossing logs on the fire after the Man burned, trying to keep the fire going.
These events are a huge strain on the resources of the servers that run the sims. To reduce lag and to minimize the likelihood of a crash, everyone who visits is requested to reduce your avatar’s impact by removing all scripted attachments, including prim hair. You can learn your avatar’s impact by its ARC score (also known as Draw Weight in the standard Second Life viewer and as Render Weight in Firestorm). In the standard viewer, you can learn the Draw Weight of you and of nearby avatars by first activating the Advanced Menu (click Control-Alt-D to activate it), then selecting Performance Tools and clicking Show Draw Weight for Avatars. In Firestorm, click Avatar, then Avatar Health, then Show Render Weight for Avatars.
The absolute numbers can be different for each viewer, so the best way to know whether your avatar is consuming too many server resources is to compare your ARC/Draw Weight/Render Weight with other avatars. You should be as low as possible. For most people, this means getting rid of hair, fancy clothes, and AO’s.
