“It is now highly feasible to take care of everybody on Earth at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. It no longer has to be you or me. Selfishness is unnecessary. War is obsolete. It is a mater of converting the high technology from weaponry to livingry.” – R. Buckminster Fuller
“Weaponry to livingry” is a very simple but powerful phrase that represents the solution to all humankind’s current physical problems. It’s just that clear-cut according to Bucky Fuller and many other expert individuals and organizations. All we need to do is shift approximately 40% of our global military budget from things that take life (weaponry) to things that support life (livingry – food, education, roads, housing, etc.).
Bucky Fuller discovered this solution when he was a young man. In the 1930’s, without the use of a computer (or even a yet-to-be-invented calculator), he made an inventory of all the world’s resources and correctly calculated that we were doing so much more with fewer and fewer resources that we would reach a point when there would be enough to take care of everybody.
An even more amazing aspect of his discovery is the fact that this more-with-lessing would result in all people living at a higher standard of living than anyone has ever known. Although this may sound fantastic, you need only consider your cell phone. A mere decade ago, the richest person on the planet did not have access to such technology. Now, imagine what else would be possible if we were to shift our focus and resources from weaponry to livingry.
Once a person realizes that a paradigm shift to there being enough resources to support all life is possible, the next question that comes up in the exploration of our newly acquired success is, “When will we realize our abundance? When will this take place?”
The answer is that is that it already has taken place. Bucky used to say that we are a population of three billion (now seven plus billion) billionaires who have not yet realized our good fortune. He correctly calculated that the paradigm shift resulting from our doing so much more with so much less resources would take place in about 1976.
It has now been proven that in approximately 1976 we reached the point where there was enough food on Earth to feed everyone. Still, 50,000 people continue to die of starvation every day while a huge percentage of our resources are used for weaponry rather than livingry. And this is not just the case for food. It’s true in all areas of human existence from housing to education to health care. There is enough to support us all if we stop using resources to kill one another.
We live on abundant planet where each of us can have all that we want and need without depriving another person of that same abundance. In this new paradigm, war and the politics of competition are obsolete. We simply need to wake up to the reality of cooperation in which we are all rich beyond our wildest dreams. Then, everyone can focus his or her time and energy on the things that they love so that everyone can make their full contribution to others.
May we all awaken to the abundance that is our birthright so that we can discover and share our personal gifts and talents.
