Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings, made up of musicians drawn primarily from the Detroit Symphony and Michigan Opera Theatre orchestras, is an ensemble committed to bringing to life the body of intimate classical music that requires a small group of instruments. Hence the term “chamber” music; these pieces were often performed as private concerts in the salons of wealthy patrons.
This Friday, however, DCWS will present something that might be dubbed “chamber Broadway.” As part of its Nightnotes series, which brings the DCWS to Birmingham’s Hagopian World of Rugs showroom for special Friday, 8 p.m. performances, you can hear Broadway actress and singer Lauren Molina perform with Jason Tam and pianist Greg Jarrett.
Molina and Tam recently shared the stage in the revival of the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Marry Me A Little”. The two-person musical features songs from some of Sondheim’s most well-known productions, which will be showcased in Friday’s one-night-only “Showtime with Lauren Molina” concert. Other favorite Broadway tunes will also be included in the program.
Lauren Molina is an award winning performer who grew up in Troy, received a BFA from University of Michigan, and went on to wow them on Broadway. She originated the role of Regina in “Rock of Ages” and played Johanna in the critically acclaimed revival of “Sweeney Todd.” In addition, she also created the role of Megan in the World Premiere of “Nobody Loves You” at The Old Globe. She played Cunegonde in “Candide” at the Huntington, Goodman, and Shakespeare Theatre DC (dir. Mary Zimmerman) and received the Helen Hayes Award for best leading actress and the IRNE nomination.
Jason Tam’s Broadway credits include “Lysistrata Jones” (Xander), “A Chorus Line” (Paul), and “Les Misérables”(Gavroche), plus a long list of performances form national tours, regional theatre, film and television.
You can see this dynamic duo recreate the magic of their “Marry Me A Little” performance this Friday, November 30, at Hagopian World of Rugs, located at 850 South Old Woodward Avenue in Birmingham. There will be a 7:30 p.m. reception, and then the performance begins at 8 p.m.
