“The X Factor” U.S. judge Britney Spears and her second ex-husband, Kevin Federline, owe $37,712.71 in back taxes to the state of California. According to TMZ, which posted the tax documents online, the California Franchise Tax Board has “hit the former couple with a lien for unpaid income tax from 2004,” which was the year they got married.
Representatives for Spears and Federline aren’t commenting, but the amount is chump change to Spears, who is one of the highest-earning entertainment celebrities in the world. According to Forbes magazine, Spears made $58 million from May 2011 to May 2012. That doesn’t include the reported $15 million she’s getting paid in 2012 for being a judge on “The X Factor” U.S.
Spears makes most of her money through touring, endorsement deals and merchandise sales, including her successful fragrance business with beauty company Elizabeth Arden.
Federline (who used to be Spears’ backup dancer) and Spears were married in 2004 and split up in 2006. Their bitter divorce was finalized in 2008. They also had a nasty custody battle over their two sons (Sean Preston and Jayden James) that resulted in Spears losing custody of the kids in 2007. That was also the year she spent time in rehab and had her notorious meltdown when she shaved off all of the hair on her head and then days later attacked paparazzi with an umbrella.
Federline has three other kids: a son and a daughter with ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson (she was pregnant with their second child when he left her for Spears) and a daughter with his current girlfriend Victoria Prince. Federline, who was nicknamed K-Fed by the media, was once an aspiring rapper. His attempts at being a music star in 2006 were a miserable failure. He has since appeared occasionally on reality TV shows such as “Celebrity Fit Club” but he doesn’t seem to have any profession since he stopped being a professional dancer years ago. As part of his divorce settlement from Spears, she pays him alimony and child support for their two kids.
This isn’t the first tax lien against Federline. In 2011, he was slapped with a federal tax lien for $17,969.81, for unpaid taxes dating back to 2008, according to TMZ.
Spears’ first husband was Jason Alexander, who had known her since childhood. They eloped in January 2004, but the marriage was quickly annulled two days later. She is currently engaged to Jason Trawick, her former agent whom she’s been dating since 2009. Trawick and Spears, who got engaged in December 2011, have not announced a wedding date.
