Of the 20 soccer games in the United States with the highest attendance in 2012, Brazil featured in the top three.
Mexico-Brazil (84,519) was highest, Argentina-Brazil (81,994) was second and USA-Brazil (67,619) was third.
The strong U.S. interest in Brazilian soccer is particularly interesting to broadcasters as they now consider opportunities in competition between the nations of CONCACAF (North and Central America and Caribbean) and CONMEBOL (South America) arising from new CONCACAF initiatives. The trial balloon is likely to be a united Copa America in 2016, based in the United States.
“The main point that I see here is that we should create a tournament that means something and also will allow us to develop it,” CONCACAF Secretary General Enrique Sanz told me. “If that is created, broadcasters will jump in with ideas and if executed in the right way it will generate ratings. The initiatives have been prepared from the federations to see what’s best for the confederation.”
