The brave Mexican mayor has faced down and survived numerous assassination attempts on her life as she fought against the drug gangs in her region. Her tortured body was discovered in a ditch on the side of the road in San Juan Tararameo, Cuitzeo Township.
Maria Santos Gorrostieta, 36 died after being stabbed, burned, bound and beaten. Gorrostieta was last been seen on November 12.
Gorrostieta had her daughter in her car that morning while she was taking the little girl to school in Morelia. A car driven by two men blocked their path forcing them to stop. The two men then drug her out of her van and whisked her away.
Her family reported her missing to the police and a massive search was undertaken. Finally eight days later, they discovered her battered body.
Maria Santos Gorrostieta waged a bitter war against the drug gangs in her area. In doing so, she painted a huge target not only on herself but on her family as well.
During an October 2009 ambush, the car Gorrostieta and her husband Jose Sanchez were riding in was attacked. Gorrostieta survived two gunshot wounds however, her husband died in the attack. The gunmen were sent by a murderous drug cartel.
After only three short months, Gorrostieta was once again forced to survive another assassination attempt. Taking a stand, Gorrostieta spoke out against the drug cartels.
“I have a clear conscience. I have never had any issues of any kind, be it money, family or crime related, and I have never had any fights with any neighbors or residents of my town, or any other town.” She then vowed to “continue fighting, true to my ideals and my convictions, convinced that the truth will make us free.”
Maria Santos Gorrostieta served as the mayor from 2008 until 2011. Many in the region consider her a heroine for taking a stand against the drug cartels. Gorrostieta has two sons and a daughter who will now face life without their mother. Her second husband, Nereo Delgado Patinoran disappeared at the same time that Gorrostieta did and at this time is still considered missing.
