‘The Spy Who Saved Christmas’ by Dana Marton made it’s debut via Harlequin Intrigue in 2010. However, this book is timeless. It reads as good today as it did two years ago. It’s the perfect read at Christmas time, but not so thickly laced with Christmas that it couldn’t be read in June.
Lara Jordan always played by the book. She was the perfect girl next door. She never raised an eyebrow or stood out in her small town. That is until she takes over her uncle’s butcher shop and finds more than delicious pastry at the bakery next door. At the time, she doesn’t realize that bad boy Reid Graham isn’t just a baker. All she knows is he makes her heart melt with just a look and in an incredibly short time he talks her out of her virginity. Later that night, an explosion erupts and both the bakery and the butcher shop are burned to the ground. Lara’s world is turned upside down. The man she was falling in love with is dead and she learns she is pregnant with his child or, shall I say, children. She is pregnant with his twin sons.
Almost two years later, Lara finds herself on a date with a boring, yet stable man. Reid is just a precious memory until her eyes wonder to the other side of the restaurant and she spots him on a date with another woman. Furious and ready to demand answers, Lara approaches Reid who is certain she will blow his cover. Before they can mince words, gunfire breaks out. Reid’s companion is shot dead and he has no choice but to take Lara to safety with him. Lara learns Reid is a spy working for a covert government agency and his stint as a baker was only a cover. She also learns that while he regretted leaving her and hasn’t stopped thinking about her, he is already planning to disappear again. That is until he learns that he is the father of her two children.
Reid is deep undercover trying to take down a homegrown terrorist ring. Trouble is on his tail and won’t rest until he and everyone he comes in contact with is dead. When the twins are taken hostage Lara and Reid must work together to get their sons back. Can they do it in time? Will Reid runaway again or will love and family keep his heart from allowing that to happen?
FBI, spies, covert operations, and suspense all add to the excitement of this romantic suspense novel. The heroine is a strong, independent woman who puts her children above everything in her life. She is down to Earth and very likable. The hero, pretend to be a tough, bad guy but under all those muscles, he is just a teddy bear. Who doesn’t love a hunk who is also a loving father?
Dana Marton beautifully blends romance and suspense to create the perfect excitement and page turning novel. She also has a way of making her characters jump to life. They are strong and believable. There are often times just a line or two coming from a character will make the reader laugh out loud and think, “that’s happened to me.”
