A change of mind is easier said than done. Well-being encompasses many dimensions that constitute who we are. We may be very physically fit but if our emotions are in stormy waters constantly then wellness is not our state. How can a shift in perception alter our experience of how life shows up for us? According to Gabrielle Bernstein’s new book May Cause Miracles, changing your perspective from fear-based to love-based can make life look like an everyday miracle. When Bernstein uses the word love she is referring to it in it the “agape” sense not romantically. Love is defined as the opposite of fear. From fear stems thoughts and corresponding actions of defensiveness and hostility which only creates a negative experience of the world.

In May Cause Miracles, Bernstein has created a daily practice manual with exercises and reflections aimed at training yourself how to see your life from a different angle. The format is structured into seven weeks, each with a theme, and every day with a particular focus. Gradually the daily lessons build upon one another to reinforce a love-based world view to replace a fear-based one. So far, those who have worked with Bernstein and read her earlier books, have reported that the fundamental shift in perception has made their lives a much better experience than before. “By choosing to follow this plan for the next 40 days, you’ll begin to reprogram your thoughts from fear back to love. If you dig the results, stick to the path and commit to a life as a miracle worker,” says Bernstein.
The book outlines a practice for shifting perception over a 40 day period in the following way:
Week 1: Becoming Miracle Minded
- Practices: witness your fear, becoming willing to see love, choose a new perspective, gratitude is the attitude, learning to forgive, expect miracles, reflect and prepare
Week 2: A New Self Perception
- Practices: witness your self-induced fear, be willing to love yourself, choose to love myself today, self-gratitude, forgiveness, go big and expect miracles, reflect and prepare
Week 3: Body Image
- Practices: a new reflection, my body is light, what do I choose to see in the mirror, getting my gratitude on, inverse of the fog, miracles of your body, reflect and prepare
Week 4: Relationships
- Practices: witness the ego’s special illusions, be willing to turn your ego over to your ~ing, kindness created me kind, be grateful for the purpose of the relationship, forgive everyone, miraculous relationships, reflect and prepare
Week 5: Raise Your Self-Worth, Raise Your Net Worth
- Practices: witness your financial fears, willing to change, a financial shift, gratitude creates abundance, “F” in finance is for forgiveness, money and miracles, reflect and prepare
Week 6: Working Miracles
- Practices: witness your ways in the world, gratitude to the world, a letter of forgiveness, you are a miracle worker, reflect and celebrate
By the end of the six weeks the intention of May Cause Miracles is that the shift in perception are part of a mindset that is the foundation of living a love-based reality.
“Like any effective practice, true transformation occurs with daily repetition. Begin with a 40-day commitment and start experiencing positive results immediately. Why 40 days? Metaphysicians and yogis place much emphasis on the repetition of a 40-day practice. Mythical examples range from Moses’s 40 days and 40 nights spent on Mount Sinai to the story of the Buddha reaching enlightenment on the full moon in May after meditating and fasting under the Bodhi tree for 40 days. The number has scientific significance, too: research has shown that after repeating a new pattern for 40 days, you can change the neural pathways in your brain to create long-lasting change. So let’s take a cue from the mystics and the scientists and commit to this 40-day fear cleanse. It’s the simple, consistent shifts that count when you’re making change—so I’ve outlined this journey to be fun and achievable. I will guide you to keep it uncomplicated and stay on track. And one day at a time you’ll become a miracle worker,” says Bernstein.
May Cause Miracles hits the bookshelves on January 1, 2013 which is good timing for the fresh starts in the New Year. The book also corresponds to Bernstein’s six week coaching program based on the principles and exercises in May Cause Miracles. As an incentive to readers who pre-order the book, Bernstein is giving away four free gifts, including two meditations and her video course ‘How to Create What You Want in 2013’. “Each week of the book is loaded with guided meditations. To accompany the written meditations in the book I created a meditation album with incredible original music. The 11-track album offers readers a deeper opportunity to heighten their spirit and center into a space of peace. In addition to calming your mind and relaxing your body, meditation offers people an opportunity to work through old fears and to cut cords with negative attachments. Most of my greatest emotional healing has occurred on the meditation pillow, and it is my mission to help others find that same miracle,” Bernstein explains.
I agree with the sentiment that Carrie Bradshaw has been replaced with a new heroine: Gabrielle Bertstein. If Carrie was all about fear based thinking then Gabrielle is all about love-based thinking. After reading her Spirit Junkie book it’s clear that life flows smoother when fear isn’t running the show. When I watched an old SATC episode, I even thought Carrie Bradshaw needed to pick up this book!

Hint: When reading this book as a daily practice during the 6 weeks, choose a song that inspires the same messages as the exercises, one suggestion is Defying Gravity sung by Idina Menzel.
