NEWARK – It’s the middle of basketball season at the Bob Carpenter Center, but the softball and baseball teams got in on the action recently with the release of their spring schedules.
Five early season tournaments, including their very own University of Delaware Spring Invitational, highlight the Blue Hens’ softball slate. Delaware will play 21 games at home this season counting the invitational and nine Colonial Athletic Association contests.
Coach Jamie Wolhbach opens his third season at the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament on Feb. 8-10. The other teams in the tournament are the hosts, Southern, Tennessee-Martin, Louisiana Tech and Nicholls State.
Next up is the Jacksonville University Invitational on Feb. 22-24. UD’s opponents there include Mount St. Mary’s (twice), Seton Hall, South Alabama and host Jacksonville.
March begins at the Norfolk State Spartan Classic (March 2-3), with Army (twice), Marist and Norfolk State. The Hampton University Tournament follows (March 8-10), with opponents including Canisius, Siena and Hampton.
Delaware’s invitational is March 15-17 and will bring Norfolk State, Hartford, St. Francis (Pa.) and Villanova to Newark. The last games before conference play are a doubleheader vs. LaSalle on March 20 before a three-game set at Drexel March 23-24. The CAA home opener is March 30-31 vs. Towson.
Other highlights on the schedule include a doubleheader at Army on April 2 and a three-game series at defending CAA champ Hofstra April 13-14.
The CAA tournament will be held May 8-10 on the campus of the regular-season champion. The Blue Hens have qualified in each of Wohlbach’s first two seasons, earning a fourth seed each time.
The Blue Hens baseball team opens its season at the Wright State University Tournament as it hopes to return to the CAA championship game. Last year, the Hens went 31-27, 17-13 in the Colonial, and came within six outs of the CAA title before bowing out to North Carolina-Wilmington.
Delaware’s 55-game slate includes two early season trips to North Carolina and Kansas, head coach Jim Sherman announced. Foes include perennial power Wichita State and Big East Conference champion Rutgers.
The season opens Feb. 15-18 in Cary, N.C., at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in the Wright State tourney. Other teams in it include the hosts, Temple, Canisius, La Salle and Albany. After traveling to Wichita for four, UD comes home for the first of its 27 home games. Monmouth visits Bob Hannah Stadium for three games on March 1. CAA play begins March 8 at Towson.
Sherman’s troops will participate in the Liberty Bell Classic in Philadelphia against other area schools. Delaware is on the road to start on March 26 and will host a second-round game on April 2 if they advance. The championship game is scheduled for April 16.
The CAA Championships return to Harrisonburg, Va., on the James Madison campus beginning May 24.
