Dancing along the lines of believable romance and fanciful weird science, “Ruby Sparks” excites immediately, kindling the burning hope that love will both manifest itself and manage all if only you believe. And while its magical elements at times impede upon the more serious tones it wishes to impress, Sparks abounds with wistful possibilities, both of the offered up writer and his muse variety and of a deeper nature involving the true definitions of love and imagination.
Kazan and Dano play well together, neither shying totally away from the film’s darker moments, and the quasi-fable feel it tries on for size results in a brilliantly perfect fit. Sparks may not be the bounciest, most sprightly rom-com, but it may be one of the most insightful…magic notwithstanding.
Though the extras menu does sport a healthy feature count, only a light dusting of material is covered with each offering, from four minute stints about the film’s story, to the two+ minute expose on the “Real-Life Couples” of the production. Two exclusive looks also accompany the Blu-ray, “Getting to Know the Cast” and “Los Angeles: The Other Character”, but neither offer anything past the norm.
So showcasing superficial elements of fun, fantasy and lust, but with far more intriguing layers hidden deep beneath its crust, “Ruby Sparks” is indeed a well earned lesson in judged book cover leaps.
