Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has been out for just over two weeks, and is receiving mixed reviews from the community. For the first few days following release, the Black Ops 2 experience was more frustrating than enjoyable. Connection and lag-related issues plagued players to the point of sheer madness. Those who have stuck with the game thus far have seen one major patch, and several other minor hotfixes. Today’s product is running much smoother and more seamlessly than before, but still leaves much to the imagination. However, it is important to remember that Black Ops 2 is still a baby. Give it time, and you will see gradual improvements. For the time being, we must find a way to persevere and adapt.
The newest monster terrorizing Call of Duty players is the advent of “skill-based matchmaking.” This was deployed by Treyarch to ensure that players of similar rank and statistics would be matched up against each other. Here is the head honcho himself, David Vonderhaar, tweeting about it: https://twitter.com/DavidVonderhaar/status/271861828097818624. This seems fair, but it is very difficult to play well, especially if you are a good player going up against a team of other good players. In Black Ops 2, “pubstomping” is nonexistent. Every game is an intense competition.
Competition is healthy, but equally exasperating. Before you give up, try out these easy tips and you will definitely see an improvement in your scores and overall statistics.
Tip #1: Play in a party. If you have yourself a good game, and notice someone else did well also, send that person a friend request! Tell them it was a good game and you would like to team up. This may not seem like a big deal, but there is a snowball effect here. That person may have other friends that you can potentially meet, and vice versa. Eventually, you will have a solid network of gaming buddies to play with. It is much easier to succeed with a team rather than by yourself. Check out this website as well: http://www.hupitgaming.com/. H.U.P.I.T stands for “Helping Unite Players Into Teams.” They have a section called “Sharing Gamertags,” where users can submit their own information as well as look up others.
Tip #2: Communicate. This requires a microphone, which must be purchased separately. Mics range from cheap Bluetooth earpieces (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish%26%23153%3B+-+Bluetooth+Gaming+He…), to affordable headsets (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Turtle+Beach+-+Ear+Force+PX21+Headset+for+Pl…), to top-of-the-line headsets (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Astro+Gaming+-+A40+Audio+System+for+Windows%…). Voice communication with teammates is vital to winning games. For example, if you are killed in a certain area of the map, let your teammates know so they aren’t shot in the back. Use each other to stay aware of your surroundings, and you will see a difference in the outcome your games.
Tip #3: Use low scorestreaks. Put away the Lodestar, K9 Unit, and Swarm, because they will not help you here! It is hard to achieve good scores and ultimately win games when you are only getting these streaks once every few games. Do yourself a favor and use this exact scorestreak loadout: UAV, Counter-UAV, and Lightning Strike. Better yet, tell your teammates to do the same thing. UAV and CUAV are not difficult streaks to obtain, and with a constant flow of them in the air, you can spend the entire game knowing where the enemy is while you remain hidden to them. Not only that, but you also get bonus score added to your streak when teammates get kills with your UAV and CUAV up. This makes the Lightning Strike incredibly easy to get. In combination with UAV, Lightning Strike can be very deadly.
Tip #4: Play objective-type game modes. This means Kill Confirmed, Domination, or Hardpoint. In addition, do not make kills your primary focus. Play the objective first, and get kills along the way. You get more score for collecting tags, capturing flags, and defending objectives than kills alone. You will get your scorestreaks faster and more frequently. Think of how many times you have been killed by a Lightning Strike, or heard the guy on the crackly PA say, “Enemy UAV inbound.” Well no more, because that can be you!
Notice that specific custom classes were never mentioned in this article. That is because the Pick 10 Create-a-Class system in Black Ops 2 offers endless combinations and customization; it would be impossible to come up with the “perfect” kit. Remember, it’s not what you use, it’s how you use it. Choose whatever weapon and perks you prefer and what suits your playstyle. Use the aforementioned tips in conjunction with your favorite class, and you will get better scores, guaranteed.
