Black Friday sales of firearms this year set a new one day record, according to The Hattiesburg American on Monday. This year saw a near 20 percent increase in FBI background checks for the day, from 129,166 on last year’s Black Friday to 154,873 this year.
There were so many background checks that the FBI’s servers briefly crashed twice.
“With the recent election, some people are making buying decisions just in case something (new law) happens,” the American quotes Don Gallardo, manager of Shooter’s World in Phoenix, as saying. Gallardo’s store saw a 10 percent increase in Black Friday purchases.
According to Gallardo, the reason for the increase in gun purchases is a fear that a lame duck Barack Obama administration may institute strict gun control laws. This fear has caused gun sales to increase since Obama’s election in 2008. Firearms manufacturer Ruger has seen an 86 percent increase in sales since then, and Smith & Wesson’s increased by 44 percent. The Wednesday after Obama’s reelection, these two companies saw their stock prices soar even while the Dow Jones intraday dropped by 2.23 percent.
In 2011 alone, 10.8 million firearms were sold, which is more “than there are active duty military members in the world’s fourteen largest armies combined,” according to Mac Slavo.
Even though Obama hasn’t instituted any new gun control laws, he has a history of being anti-gun and has expressed support as president for gun control.
In February 2009, Attorney General Eric Holder was asked about gun control at a press conference. He responded: “Well, as President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons.”
Obama confirmed his support for the ban during the second presidential debate with Mitt Romney.
In March 2011, Obama told Sarah Brady of the Brady Campaign that gun control “was very much on his agenda,” assuring her, “I just want you to know that we are working on it. We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar.”
One of these “under the radar” processes is most likely Operation Fast and Furious, which saw the ATF provide firearms to Mexican drug cartels in an effort to demonize the second amendment and bring about more gun regulations. Countless Mexicans have been killed as a result, along with U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.
Obama also supports the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, a global gun ban that would allow for a UN occupation of places to seize and destroy “weapons stockpiles” if a government can’t get rid of guns through legislation.
