The Thanksgiving feast is over and the leftovers fill the refrigerator. Many have already hit the road to find bargains at sales on Black Friday.
This year, several stores opened on Thanksgiving evening at 8-9 p.m. Some shoppers even skipped Thanksgiving dinner to sit outside in the cold, awaiting the opening of stores.
The Black Friday.com has links to Black Friday ads from every store you can imagine, from Target, Best Buy and other big box stores to Dollar General, True Value and other smaller stores.
The longest lines tonight are at stores with big bargains on electronics. I didn’t do the Thanksgiving night Black Friday but have received reports back from friends on Facebook and from my stepson and stepdaughter who are out in the madness.
Many of the Black Friday sales that began at some stores at 8 p.m. on Thursday will run through Friday afternoon. There’s still time to wait in line if you dare. Many of the stores will open on Friday at 4-6 a.m.
Following closely behind Black Friday is the day known as Small Business Saturday. Many shoppers prefer to skip Black Friday and keep their holiday dollars in the local community by supporting small businesses. Over 3.1 million Facebook fans agree.
My two top stores for Small Business Saturday shopping in Lynchburg are Accents Flags and Gifts, located at 1716 Main Street, and Givens Books & Little Dickens, located at 2236 Lakeside Drive.
At Givens Books, you can find of the most unique toys and gifts for children. Danny Givens and his staff have been providing books, toys and teacher supplies in Lynchburg since 1976. The bookstore originally operated by Givens’ parents merged with the toy store founded by Givens in 1999 and moved to the current location. Givens is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
Some of the favorites at Givens include science kits, remote control devices, construction toys, arts and crafts kits, pretend play items, puzzles and more. Two items that are sure to be a hit this year are LoopDeDoo, a weaving loom that helps kids make friendship bracelets and Spooner boards, a wheel-less skateboard that kids can ride anywhere.
At Accents Flags and Gifts, you will find a wide selection of home decor and gift items, suitable for everyone on your holiday list. Accents will be open on Black Friday from 8 a.m.-7 p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. with special prices marked on items throughout the store. There will also be refreshments on Friday and Saturday and a free gift with any purchase.
Accents carries ornaments and many Christmas items but you’ll also find outdoor and garden gifts, flags of every variety, food gifts, beach-theme gifts, angel gifts, pet gifts and decor and much more.
