Depending on individual recipes, the Monte Cristo is grilled or deep-fried, comes with or without mustard, with or without powdered sugar, is ham and turkey or just one or the other, and is served with a fruit dip or something else. It goes without saying that everyone puts their individual spin on this sandwich.
The history of the Monte Cristo tributes the creation of this recipe to a French chef, and consists of gruyere cheese and ham on crustless bread, dipped in egg, and grilled in butter. In the United States, the sandwich became popular in the 1930s and remains popular to this day.
This recipe is a simple ham and Swiss cheese dipped in a yummy French toast mixture and grilled to perfection. Don’t forget the dipping sauce – it’s key! Raspberry syrup, raspberry or strawberry preserves or other fruit-based sauce will work well.
Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe
Ingredients for two Monte Cristo Sandwiches:
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup milk
- ½ tsp. nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 tablespoon oil or butter
- 4 slices bread (your choice)
- 4 slices ham
- 4 slices Swiss cheese (thinly sliced)
- Jam for dipping (raspberry, strawberry or currant work well)
- Powdered sugar (optional)
Directions for making Monte Cristo Sandwiches:
Whisk together eggs, milk, nutmeg, and flour. Rub oil or butter on a griddle and heat to medium high. (If you use butter, be careful it doesn’t burn as it affects the taste.)
Assemble the sandwich by putting a slice of cheese on a piece of bread (make sure it covers most of the bread), top with the ham, then the other slice of cheese, then the remaining piece of bread. Holding on to the sandwich, quickly dip one end in the egg mixture, then the other end, so that the bread is covered with the egg mixture. Place it on the hot griddle; flip it carefully after it has browned on one side. Grill until browned on both sides. Serve with a side of jam, jelly or syrup for dipping. You can sprinkle powdered sugar over it prior to serving.
