Last night’s episode of “Be the Boss” titled, “Jazzercise” put two outstanding employees against each other to give them the opportunity for a promotion of a lifetime. “Jazzercise” started in Carlsbad, Calif. and has grown into the world’s largest dance/fitness chain.
Judi Sheppard Missett, the founder and CEO of Jazzercise have summoned two of their best instructors. Sophia is from Ypsilanti, Mich. and she was over 200 pounds when she found Jazzercise and is now an instructor. Kim is also an instructor from Romeoville, Ill. and loves her job and is also the choreographer for the local high school.
Both women are vying for a job, as a liaison between corporate and the franchises. The three days they will be there will be their interview. For their first test, they must go to a local college campus and teach a class, then they must promote “Jazzercise” and sign up 25 new customers. They met with Kelly, the chief sales and marketing officer. Their one-on-one plan was not getting anyone interested in taking a class. Sophia saw that a large gymnasium had lots of people going in, and she suggested they went there. They had an announcement going on every 15 minutes to draw people to their class. The idea was Sophia’s, but Kim also credit, causing Sophia not to trust her. When they finished their class, Sophia noticed that Kim had taken all the freebies for herself to distribute, leaving Sophia with none.
The next day, at corporate headquarters, they met again with Judi to discuss the prior day. Kim tried to throw Sophia under the bus, but Judi did not accept her disclaimer. Now they have to meet with Judi’s daughter Shanna, the president of “Jazzercise” to make a DVD of their exercise routine. This test requires them to pick a theme, choreograph the routine and oversee the production of the DVD. They each had five team members for their team to perform the routine. Kim came up with the idea of “Jazzercise” Broadway bound for her theme using top hats like in the show “Rent.” Because Sophia is from St. Lucia in the Caribbean, she will go with an island theme.
When Shanna came to see Kim’s production, it was not what she expected and there was no leadership being shown by Kim. Kim and her group were on time but with only one take; she dropped her top hat, but regained her composure and kept going.
Sophia was doing well; her team was out getting props, but time was going by, and she was late. Finally, when the shoot was over, they both got a call from Shanna to meet her and the executive team to view each routine. The ladies got to meet again with Judi to give her the reasons why they should be given the job.
Kim got the job, and Sophia remained calm. As Kim ran to see her family, she was thrilled.
Sophia found out that she would receive her own “Jazzercise” franchise. She was thrilled beyond belief; her husband was waiting outside for her, and then they drove to a new franchise for the celebration.
Kim is currently training for her new role as “Jazzercise Incorporated Ambassador.” She starts her job in 2013.
Sophia is looking forward to opening her new “Jazzercise” center in 2013 thanks to “Be the Boss.”
