I have previously written on the subject of adopting a new pet for Christmas and why it is not the best of ideas. In reality we are not living the life of “Lady and the Tramp” which has touched all of our lives. After all, what is more precious than the joy of a sweet puppy licking your face, wagging its tail and exhibiting its natural playful nature on Christmas morning? Although it is not the best time to bring a new puppy into the home, if that is your decision, there are some things you should consider before doing so. There may be some situations where a new puppy can be a welcome gift without small children and hectic celebrations. So, where do you find a new puppy in time for the Christmas giving? Contact your local Rockford-area shelters and Humane Society as listed below or one closest to your home for help on making the right decision on adopting a pet a Christmas. Any reputable facility knows the hazards of pet adoptions as Christmas gifts.
Be aware that pet stores will be reaching out to you with gorgeous puppy eyes pleading for you to take them. These stores now know that most people are aware that their puppies come from puppy mills and will do anything to “change your mind” with false advertising. If they try to say their pups come from breeders, trust me, it is farthest from the truth. If we want to stop puppy mills from flourishing and really save the lives of these unfortunate, abused dogs, we have to stop supporting the pet stores that sell them for profit. They don’t care about their pups – only the money they can make at the hands of puppy mills – read my article on the subject at http://rootshed.com/pet-care-in-rockford/puppy-mills-need-to-be-stopped-and-you-can-help.
The puppy mill project is a special organization that is adamant in their work to stop the progression of puppy mills but they cannot do it alone without our help and support. The puppies need our help. Think of your own precious pups, and what it would be like if they were in these unfortunate situations. I know it would break my heart as it does when I think of how some humans disrespect animals through neglect and abuse for their own self-worth. Just take a moment to check the site at http://www.thepuppymillproject.org/page/page/8151946.htm. You will find loads of information as well as a list of documented pet stores around our country that support puppy mills. We have got to save these pups.
Of course, puppies are born all the time, including the Christmas season. If your home and family is prepared for a new pet at this hectic time of year, be sure to do your research and find a very reputable breeder. One way to do so is to contact your local Humane Society, American Kennel Club or Continental Kennel Club. They have listings for only the best most reputable breeders. Plan ahead and think everything through. A puppy is a huge responsibility. Do you have the bed, blankets, toys, food, dishes, treats and, most importantly, the time to spend potty training, loving and cuddling the new puppy? That new baby is going to be scared of all that is going on, being the “new kid in town.” If you are not ready with all the necessities it needs plus the time and compassion to give that new “Christmas Gift” the comfort and consoling it will need at this busy time, find a way to present the idea of a new pup at Christmas time and bring the new pet home after the hustle and bustle has subsided. It will be better for all concerned.
