UFC Interim Welterweight champion, Carlos Condit, squares off with the formidable champion, Georges St. Pierre (GSP) at UFC 154 on Saturday, November 17. Condit has a complicated battle ahead of him.
On Fuel TV’s “UFC Tonight”, Carlos Condit (28-5) identified what he is prepared to handle in his attempt to defeat GSP (22-2). “Georges is such a dynamic fighter. He’s an incredible athlete. He’s a powerful, explosive guy. Between takedowns and strikes, there’s a lot to deal with.”
“UFC Tonight” Analyst, Kenny Florian identified the elements in Condit’s game that make him dangerous, “What makes Condit so dangerous is you see him adapting to his opponents. We saw that in his last fight against Nick Diaz. He is also reckless, he attacks and goes forward and that can be very dangerous.”
Being reckless as a strength might work early in the fight. But, if Georges figures out the pattern in Condit’s advances, Condit might have the opportunity to experience a variety of takedown attempts from GSP.
According to FightMetric, Georges averages 4.3 takedowns in a 15 minute time period. Condit averages less than one takedown (0.81) in the same time frame.
Kenny Florian, who has trained with GSP in Montreal said, “The key to his success is in his takedowns. He has the ability to take down anyone. The thing is, he’s coming off a 19-month break and an ACL injury. A lot of people are talking about his knee and can Condit attack that knee? It is his rear knee and it will be difficult for Condit to attack that leg, but what he needs to worry about is that knee for explosiveness in his takedowns. GSP has the best takedown percentage in UFC history. This is the first time he is going to test it for real. GSP mixes it up so well and once he is on that leg, if it is 100 percent, he will use it to take down Condit. He has phenomenal ground and pound and is a black belt in jiu jitsu if he needs to use it.”
Respect the knee
While attention will be focused on GSP and how his knee will impact his game, Carlos Condit has knee strikes as a weapon to use against GSP to discourage Georges from shooting in for a takedown.
Kenny Florian commented on Condit’s knee strikes, “[Carlos] can submit you and he can knock you out. Especially with those knees and the knees are a great weapon against a guy who loves to change levels and take you down.”
