Anonymous targets members of the Steubenville High School Big Red football team accused of raping and kidnapping an unconscious and intoxicated young woman, in an action dubbed Operation Roll Red Roll (#OpRollRedRoll).
On Dec. 24 hacktivists associated with the Anonymous collective launched Operation Roll Red Roll by hacking and defacing a website (rollredroll.com) promoting the prominent Ohio high school football team. At the time of posting the website defacement had not been removed and was still visible to visitors.
Anonymous is demanding that all those involved in the sexual assault, including team members and team supporters who witnessed the sexual assault yet did nothing to stop the assault, publicly apologize to the girl and her family. Anonymous is threatening to release the Social Security numbers, addresses, phone numbers and personal information about those involved in the alleged incident, information gained from a high school football team booster and webmaster of the hacked Roll Red Roll website.
According to reports, Steubenville High School’s star football players Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond are charged with the rape and kidnap of a young woman. However, the two accused were not the only ones involved. Unconscious and intoxicated, players carried the victim from party to party, where members of the high school football team raped and sexually abused the girl while other team members and team supporters watched, some even capturing video of the assault with their cell phones.
In the Roll Red Roll defacement, Anonymous hacktivists accuse officials and residents of Steubenville of protecting the beloved football team by charging only two of its players with the rape of a girl “when everyone present was guilty.” In the defacement, Anonymous provides links to videos containing images of the assault, and claims the guilty football players had dubbed themselves the “Rape Crew.”
WTRF reports as a result of Operation Roll Red Roll two peaceful demonstrations are being organized to show support for the alleged victim in the Steubenville rape case. The events are being called Occupy Steubenville, and the protests are planned for noon December 29 and January 5 at the Steubenville City Hall. Organizers say the events are being held to show support for the victim and opposition to local officials who many believe to be corrupt and engaged in a cover-up to protect the football team.
Operation Roll Red Roll (#OpRollRedRoll) is being coordinated via Twitter by #KnightSec @KYAnonymous.
