If you like Ike as well as Christmas, then you’ll surely want to visit the Eisenhower National Historic Site during the month of December. Starting on Dec. 1 and lasting through New Year’s Eve, the Eisenhower farm will be all decked out for the Christmas season.
Because Ike and Mamie shared such a love for the Christmas holiday, it is not surprising to learn that they decked the halls of their Gettysburg home with all the traditional holiday folly. Visiting guests have the chance to experience first-hand exactly the way the Eisenhower home appeared around Christmas in the 1950s.
Step through the living room and enjoy the poinsettias, wreaths, boughs of pine and holly, silver, mistletoe and more. Feast your eyes on a candy-cane covered tree, surrounded by presents. Then, head for the dining room to see the table set for Christmas dinner. Sugar cookies and plum pudding adorn the kitchen, awaiting the arrival of the Eisenhower grandchildren, while a life-sized Santa can be found on the porch, also awaiting their arrival.
Adding to the festive tour, park rangers will be onsite to enlighten visitors with tales and recollections of past Eisenhower family Christmases in Gettysburg. During the presentations and tours, holiday music from the Eisenhowers’ own album collections will accompany the holiday atmosphere.
As you explore and adore the Eisenhower Christmas spirit, be sure to check out the special holiday items on exhibit. The exhibit is comprised of original Eisenhower decorations and the Eisenhowers’ own specially designed White House Christmas cards. The exhibit can be found in the reception center where visitors will also find Christmas gift prints of the President’s paintings.
In addition to this month-long engagement, there will be a special reception on Saturday, Dec. 10. Refreshments will be provided by Gettysburg Tours, Inc. You won’t want to miss it! Share this holiday season with your family and the First family of Christmas past.
