We’ve finally made it to the finale of “America’s Next Top Model: College Edition.” Our final three girls are Laura, Leila and Kiara. Unlike past finale shows, Tyra has done things a bit different, diving immediately into the final runway show.
Things start out at Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica, which is reputed to be haunted. The ghost is a female, who killed her husbands and boyfriends, and she will kill any woman that smizes better than she does. Unlike past seasons where half the final episode consisted of challenges to eliminate one of the three girls, all three girls are set to walk in the final runway.
Tyra talks to the audience that is gathered to watch the final show, welcoming everyone, and she explains that Kelly and Johnny are backstage with the girls who are getting ready. We see video of what is happening backstage, and find out that several of the eliminated models will also walk in the finale, and opening the show is ANTM 18 winner, Sophie Sumner. Tyra also says that the three finalists participated in a Nine West photo shoot earlier in the week. This segues into scenes of the girls at the shoot.
The client, Nine West is represented by Kelly Cutrone, who makes her presence known at the photo shoot, giving direction to the girls on how she wants them to pose and look. This upsets photographer Jez Smith, and the two get into a bitter argument during Laura’s shoot.
Things cool down a bit when it’s time for Leila to do her shoot, and Kelly is really happy with her shots. When it’s Kiara’s turn, she seems to have a bit of a problem giving the right energy that Johnny was asking for. We’ll have to see who gets the best shot at panel.
Cutting back to the live runway show, we again see Tyra addressing the audience. She tells them that the girls did a Nylon Magazine photo shoot at locations at the Half Moon Resort. Once more, we cut to video of the shoots.
The girls work with photographer Jimmy Fontaine, and Laura seems to do a pretty good job. J. Errico, who is the Fashion Director for Nylon Magazine commented that he thought she did a good job, and she is very commercial looking. Kiara is photographed second, and has some fun shoots on a bicycle and by the beach. Leila was third, and J. Errico remarked that he felt she was the “most” Nylon. She posed hanging from a tree, holding a crab, and riding a bicycle.
Soon, we see the girls doing their photo shoots, and they are surprised by their families. Laura’s mother and father are there for her, while Leila has her mother, and Kiara has her grandmother. There are tears of happiness between all the girls and their family members.
Cutting back to the live event, we see the girls backstage continuing to get ready for the show, now with their family members, and Tyra comes in and meets with each girl and their family.
Now, it’s on with the show. And what a show it was. We start with a scene of Rob Evans walking around the castle. Soon, we see each of the girls in the background, and then a ghostly Sophie Sumner who gets jealous as she sees the girls interacting with Rob. She ends up tossing them over the second floor railing and running to Rob, saying that he belongs to her.
Close up on the girls, who are beautifully dead on the first floor, and the runway show will feature them each as ghosts.
Sophie leads off the show, and also featured are Nastasia, Kristin, Yvonne, Darian, Allyssa and Brittany, along with the finalists Laura, Kiara and Leila.
Of all the girls, Kiara has the very best walk, while Leila trips down the stairs, but recovers, only to fall again after she stepped off the end of the stage. She is fine, but this doesn’t look good for her.
It’s time for judging. The girls arriving at judging wearing a gown from the runway show. All of them look incredible. Tyra introduces the judges, Kelly Cutrone, Rob Evans and BryanBoy. Time for some critiques.
First the judges discuss how each girl did on the runway. They think Laura did a really good job, but she walked with one hand clenched shut. She won 3 challenges in previous weeks, so if she wins, she will take an additional $30,000 in scholarship money. Kiara is critiqued next. They absolutely loved her walk, and she will take home $40,000 in scholarship money from winning 4 challenges if she wins. Leila is the final girl, and of course, they bring up the falls, and Kelly is just over her. She tells her she doesn’t want to hear excuses. You either do it or you don’t. Leila will take home $10,000 in scholarship money if she wins for winning 1 challenge.
Next, the judges talk about the Nine West photo shoot. They think Laura did well, and they congratulate her on retaining her composure when Kelly and Jez were fighting. Tyra says that Laura was tooching with her feet, and coined a new “tooch” look… the shoey tooch. The judges are not all that hot about Kiara’s shot, saying she looks too casual. The judges were over the moon on Leila’s pic, saying it’s a perfect mix of commercial and high fashion, but she really needs to work on her walk.
The judges added the social media scores and average challenge scores and Tyra announces first who will NOT be America’s Next Top Model. And that person is Leila.
It’s down to Kiara and Laura. The scores flash on the board and in the end the winner is Laura. She breaks down crying in disbelief, while Kiara is shocked and disappointed to come in second.
Congratulations Laura. She’s got the curves, but she isn’t plus sized. She’s just healthy looking.
America’s Next Top Model will not return in the spring as it has every year. Instead, Cycle 20 will run in the summer, and will include both girls and boys. Should be interesting. Thanks for reading my weekly recaps, and continue to check back here for all ANTM news in between cycles.
