As a floral arrangement instructor, I often teach how to make wreaths and garlands designed for weddings, door hung ornaments and also for the Christmas decorations as well. Due to the nature of my job, I always pay attention to the American culture of beautiful arts & crafts focusing on the way of decoration in each season.
Every time I find Christmas wreaths hung on the door in the Christmas season, I remember the Japanese decoration prepared for celebrating New Year Holiday. The typical decoration for New Year celebration is called “Kadomatsu” which is made of thick bamboo trees and pine green leaves. And this is placed in front of the main entrance of each house or office building.
In addition to Kadomatsu, we often put another decoration which is hung on the upper place of the front door of each house. This is called “Shimekazari”. This is often hung on the front side of a car just like a Christmas wreath hung on the door in the United States.
The similarity between Japanese decorations (“Kadomatsu” or “Shimekazari”) and American Christmas wreaths is one of main material is pine greens. In December when new year is getting close, people in Japan start preparing the decoration of “Kadomatsu” and “Shimekazari”. The biggest difference in the way of preparation between Japan and the USA is quite few Japanese people make such decorations by themselves while many of American people make Christmas wreaths by themselves.
I guess the reason behind this situation is Japanese “Kadomatsu” and “Shimekazari” are little bit too difficult to do hand making which is very time consuming (unlike making American Christmas wreaths) and it is also difficult to find craft materials selling in the ordinary shop. Most people go to the special market held at the end of December for buying completed ornaments. If you visit Japan from the end of December through early January, you must find many cars having the decoration of “Shimekazari” hung on the front side of each car.
I try to find the information about how to make ‘Shimekazari” or “Kadomatsu” by surfing on the internet (using Japanese key words in Japanese language). But there is no sufficient information available seemingly because this kind of “craft making” is considered a professional job and only limited number of specialists engage in making these items in Japan.
Getting back to Christmas wreaths, people who learn how to make a regular flower wreath can easily make a Christmas wreath just by changing the type and color of materials. Suppose you already learned how to make a fall wreath at the classroom, you can easily make Christmas wreath as well.
If you are interested in making wreaths by yourself, visit You Tube and enter key words. Then you find bunch of useful tutorial videos for making various wreaths.
