As everyone is toasting in the New Year, the Creative Alliance of New Orleans (CANO) is preparing to kick off the Carnival season with a masked ball, costumes, live entertainment and a fabulous fashion show!
BAL DES ARTISTES, the annual benefit to support the CANO will be held on Thursday, January 3rd, 2013, 7PM at the Old Casino Building in City Park. Jeanne Nathan, founder of CANO was inspired by the original bohemian carnival balls presented by a group of artists who came together in the French Quarter in the 1920’s. Led by no less than William Faulkner, Sherwood Anderson, William Spratling and many others, the scene then was not unlike the exploding art scene of New Orleans that we are experiencing today. “It’s meant to be more freewheeling, more artsy, fun than a traditional Carnival ball. In short, this will be a Carnival ball as it should be— creative, engaging, and cutting-edge,” said Nathan.
The “ALL GOWNED UP” fashion show will feature local fashion designers, vintage gowns donated by Carnival Queens, and fabulous artist-made gowns that stretch the imagination! Designs included in the fashion show will include a southern inspired Victorian vintage gown by Elsa Brodmann. The gown designed by Brodmann reflects the style feminine and sophisticated style which is seen in her Ottilie Brodmann label. Designer Tabitha Bethune is a NOCCA graduate and lover of the arts. Bethune’s design reflects her appreciate for the theatre and Broadway, taking inspiration from The Lion King with graphic fabric and designed to elongate the neck and figure. New Orleans artist Elizabeth Shannon is known for practicing her art in the mediums of sculpture, installation, and photography and not necessarily fashion. Shannon was able to combine her sculptural elements into an avant-garde cutting edge fashion statement. She was inspired by Alexander McQueen to create her “Antler Dress”.
Over 30 gowns will walk the runway in the All Gowned Up fashion presentation and will be available for purchase and special order at the event. Other designers and artists that will be showcasing a gown include: Carolina Gallop, Jose Luis Rodriguez, Randi Laws, Elizabeth Eckman, Raine Bedsole, Robert Tanne, Sally Heller and The Everything Collective. The festivities will include music by the Courtyard Kings and a boutique, curated by Bon Castor, where guests can purchase masks and other carnival favors, jewelry, accessories and crafts.
Bal Des Artistes will be held at the old Casino building in City Park that now is home to Morning Call. The building will be transformed for one night only into a French brasserie, while the crosswalks and band shell become the staging ground for the fashion show and special costumed characters. On the second floor will be a “Parisian Piano Bar” that will be a hot new chanteuse in town, Tabitha Pearl, her band, and special celebrity guests.
Bal Des Artistes promises to bring back a little bit of the wilder, artsy and creativity of New Orleans Carnival season. “It’s just a whole New Orleans experience,” Nathan said.
