Four stellar Santa Cruz Mountains wineries have rated places on two prestigious annual lists of the best 100 wines of the year, presenting an opportunity to provide a perfect holiday gift idea for the wine lover.
Wine Spectator 2012 top l00 wine list
Winemaker Jeffrey Patterson of Mount Eden Vineyards, who has guided wine making and grape growing since 1981, placed number 26 on the Wine Spectator list for 2009 Estate Chardonnay, $50. “It is always an honor to be recognized for this annual award. With so many wines reviewed, I can’t imagine what it must be like for the editors to pick only 100, but I think it has a lot to do with a quality-price rapport. This has always been something we take pride in,” he said.
According to Wine Spectator senior editor Jim Laube, “These 100 wines reflect significant trends, recognize outstanding producers, and spotlight successful regions and vintages around the world.”
The list was selected from more than 17,000 new releases that editors rated in their independent blind tastings. More than 5,500 of the wines earned outstanding or classic ratings (90 points or higher on Wine Spectator’s 100-point scale).Ridge Monte Bello
Santa Cruz Mountains 2009 at $150, also placed on this list.
San Francisco Chronicle 2012 top 100 wine list
Alfaro Family Vineyards 2010 Lester Family Vineyard Pinot Noir, Deer Park, has been named in the top 100 wines of 2012 by the San Francisco Chronicle. A description of the wine states “The Pinot Noir, which runs $38 a bottle, is packed with juicy currant, iodine and juniper, and a subtle whack of new oak that accents, but doesn’t obscure the beauty of the Aptos soils.”
Reached on vacation in Hawaii, Richard and Mary Kay Alfaro said, “We are flattered to receive recognition for our wines, and for grapes grown in Corralitos. But you know the old saying “you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear”? Well, we started out with great grapes. And our goal is to continue making excellent wines out of superior grapes, so soon, when people say they’re going to “wine country”, we’ll know they are talking about the Santa Cruz Mountains.”
Other Santa Cruz wineries making the Chronicle list include 2009 Ridge Monte Bello Santa Cruz Mountains Red and Bonny Doon Vineyard 2010 Clos de Gilroy Central Coast Grenache.
