In anticipation of Peter Jackson‘s upcoming 2012 film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (due out on December 14, 2012), Air New Zealand is airing a delightfully cheeky safety video before their flights that features characters from the beloved tale. The gang’s all here, from the digitally-animated Gollum to the main man himself, Mr. Jackson, making this a flight that many people would positively love to board.
Crew members were made up as a plethora of characters from Middle Earth. Sure to leave no one out, there are even some folks dressed as their beloved characters while playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons with a D20, paying homage to the role-playing system seen in countless games that was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien‘s incomparable masterpieces. Speaking of Tolkien, his great grandson Royd makes a cameo here, as does Dean O’Gorman, who will be playing Fili the Dwarf in the film.
This is a wonderful way to promote more memorable safety tips than the standard practices we tend to see before a flight. Inflating a life jacket may now always have a sexier connotation, thanks to this video. It would be lovely if more flights could engage in this sort of playful medium in which they can impart important lessons while simultaneously promoting products. Kudos to Air New Zealand for getting into the spirit of Middle Earth.
Escaping to this world is not necessarily as far-fetched of an idea as you might think. Air New Zealand is offering a contest in which you can win a round-trip flight for yourself and a friend to attend the world premiere screening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Not only that, but you can also win a six-night accommodation in New Zealand, a tour of the Matamata, WETA Cave Visit in Wellington movie set, as well as other great prizes. All you need to do is count the hidden Elvish codes in the safety video and then visit the website to unlock the code. Happy entering!
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is bringing back many of the same actors that we loved from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Hugo Weaving is back as Elrond, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Elijah Wood as Frodo, Christopher Lee as Saruman, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Sir Ian Holm will be back as Old Bilbo. Martin Freeman (Dr. Watson from the Sherlock series) will be playing Bilbo Baggins, while Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch will be right alongside Freeman as The Necromancer.
