Addiction is far from a laughing matter, but it inspires many moments to look back on and share — even laugh about. At least that’s the premise of comedian Mark Lundholm, who makes three appearances in the Detroit area this week covering that subject from stem to — er — less-than stern.
Lundholm’s show, Addicted: A Comedy of Substance, promises an uproariously funny evening for all, no matter which side of addiction viewers hail from.
Lundholm triumphed by beating addiction odds, and today shares lessons meant to teach, counsel, and above all, encourage laughter. The star of CDs, DVDs and even the imaginative Recovery The Board Game has taken substance abuse survival to a whole new high in creativity.
That unique blend of comedy comes to Northville on December 13, Warren on December 14, and Howell on December 15 in three special fundraisers to benefit Brighton Center for Recovery.
The events, additionally sponsored by St. John Providence Health System and Greater Macomb Project Vox, are also being promoted by CARE of Southeast Michigan. Each will entail “a full-throttle, heart-pounding and entertaining ride,” and is based on the comedian’s own life struggles. Born of humble beginnings while a homeless criminal in Oakland, Calif., Lundholm’s experience has stretched from mental wards and rehabs to worldwide recognition as a cutting-edge artist.
His self-described “been there, drank that” approach to addiction covers all aspects of the inability to say no. He compares addictive tendencies spanning from alcohol, drugs, sex and coffee to work, food, the Internet and golf — and a lot in between.
Having appeared on major television networks as well as cable’s Comedy Central, Showtime, Bravo, and A & E, Lundholm’s approach has been critiqued as “riveting” by both the New York Times and Chicago Sun Times and appreciably lauded by other media. His one-man, off-Broadway show of the same name spurs a large part of his world travels — 50 states and 10 countries to-date.
Everyone who’s ever had a craving, or loved someone who has, will find something to laugh about in this once-in-a-lifetime spin from Lundholm’s originality.
Tickets are $20 per person, and will be held at will call for the audience. Reservations are suggested by calling (586) 541-CARE (2773) or (810) 360-5779. More info is at www.careofsem.com/events.php or www.brightonhospital.org/comedy/.
