Over the years I have interviewed scores of actors and film makers. Most of them were unknown and would remain so. Then recently I was privileged to meet Ace Cruz the thrilla from Manila and the only film maker I have ever met who has yet to make a film that didn’t make money. Let me make that perfectly clear, every film Ace Cruz has made, and he has made several, every one of which has made money. This is truly remarkable in a town where darn near everyone is enthralled with the show but utterly unaware of the business. Turns out Ace Cruz is a mega talented showman and businessman and right now he is in the hunt for an Oscar. But I am getting ahead of myself.
Ace left his native Philippines at the tender age of 3 years and moved straight into Hollywood. It took ten years for him to begin getting interested in all that Hollywood represents. As a young teen Ace watched with awe the amazing and very lovely Julia Roberts on screen and thought not only how absolutely gorgeous Julia looked but how amazing it was that people made phenomenal money doing this acting thing.
So Ace Cruz began to visit his high school drama department strictly to observe. That is his nature, Ace loves to observe and learn. Ace doesn’t merely live life he studies it in all of its aspects. Later he attended Glendale Community College and for the first time began taking acting classes. He was hooked so from there he moved on to the University of Southern California (USC) where he spent years not only learning every nuance of acting but also all aspects of film making. It was also while at USC that Ace Cruz first showed his entrepreneurial character.
You see being a Filipino Ace had the misfortune of not being totally Asian looking nor was he a believable as a Hispanic. Consequently he was forever being cast in relatively minor roles and that bothered him. So did he get angry and walk away? Did he threaten the school with a law suit? No none of that; rather Ace did what Ace does best he turned it into an opportunity and began to produce his own commercial stage plays. They worked well, he made some money and as Producer he gave himself leading roles which he executed magnificently.
That got the attention of Alfie Lorenzo in the gigantic Filipino entertainment industry. Having thus been discovered Ace spent the next three years in the Philippines starring in movies and on television and along the way making numerous important industry contacts.
Upon returning to the United States Ace was ready and anxious to get going in a meaningful way in the movie business, but first he needed a lap top computer so he took a telemarketing job with CompUSA just long enough to get his computer and come to the realization that if he could spend his day pitching products for someone else he certainly could do the same thing for his own company.
His first film was “Gangztaz” starring Todd Bridges. It made modest money but by film number three Ace was making very good money producing and selling his films. And it is not so much the making money aspect but the clear drive and positive energy that gives Ace Cruz his unique charm along with an almost certain road to ultimate success. Ace Cruz always takes the positive path. He never whines or complains or file law suits out of frustration and bitterness. Rather when Ace Cruz is presented with a challenge he devotes himself to learning how overcome that challenge in a positive and productive manner. This I say is the mark of a true winner.
He is also utterly unafraid of working with other well known stars. So far he has cast Michael Madsen, Phillip Michael Thomas, Lee Majors and Todd Bridges and many others in his various films to date. His next project is “Sketch – a drawing of life” and it will feature some very top talent including at least one prominent A Lister he is not quite ready to disclose just yet. But it does promise to be a big hit on every level and should get done sometime next year for a 2014 release. Will this be his Oscar winning film? Maybe, and then maybe not. But that doesn’t matter because Ace is committed to earning that Oscar sometime in the next ten years and only a fool would bet against him.
Ace Cruz is one of those rare and wonderful people who possess every element needed for success in any endeavor but particularly film making. He is vastly talented, well educated, extremely positive, very willing to help others and passionately driven. You can learn even more about this amazing man at his website: www.acecruz.com.
