Another winter storm is taking aim at the Ohio Valley! A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Columbus and surrounding counties to the east, west, and north. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect south of Columbus where the threshold for a warning is lower. This one has the potential to pack even more snow for parts of the area than the system on Wednesday. Other areas will see less than the previous storm. However, everyone will get hit with 100% snow this time around.
If you have plans this evening, the weather looks calm through at least 10 p.m. Expect cloudy skies and temperatures between 30 and 32 degrees. Light snow could move in as early as 10 or 11 p.m. tonight. The heaviest snow will not be here until after midnight. This means road conditions will deteriorate rapidly after midnight, so use extra caution if you will be out driving past then. The snow could be heavy at times during the overnight hours. Snowfall accumulation will be two to three inches by dawn. Heaviest amounts with be southwest of Columbus. (Snowfall map above and also linked here)
The worst of the snow will be through by 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Light snow will continue through about noon. Storm total accumulation will be two to three inches with isolated four inch amounts possible. The snow will not be completely over yet though! Scattered snow showers will develop under the upper level low pressure system by mid-afternoon as it combines with a favorable moisture fetch from Lake Michigan. Any additional accumulation will be scattered and under an inch.
Get ready for some very cold weather starting Sunday. Highs will only be in the upper 20s with lows dipping into the teens by Sunday night. Some outlying areas could even be in the upper teens on Saturday night. Another storm system will approach the region by Monday afternoon with yet another shot at a few inches of snow. Stay tuned for updates, but let this be an early heads up that there could be travel issues for New Year’s Eve.
We are in the middle of a wintry weather pattern that will only turn colder for the start of 2013. Some of the coldest air of the season so far with slide down by the end of next week. This has the potential to be our first blast of true arctic air. Keep checking back for updates on the wintry weather!
