The ungodly Bible story found at Genesis 22:1-13 in which God allegedly told Abraham to kill his only son Isaac (in Islam the son’s name is Ishmael) is held in high esteem by all three of the superstition based Abrahamic “revealed”/hearsay religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Islam even has a religious holiday devoted entirely to this horrific story called Eid al-Adha (festival of sacrifice). However, if we apply our God-given reason to the story along with our love, respect and appreciation of God, we see it is truly an anti-God unreasonable and dangerously harmful story.
This Abrahamic cult like story reminds us of the cult leader and killer Charlie Manson. Prior to sending his followers off to murder seven innocent people, Manson would often ask them if they would kill for him and if they would die for him. In the Abraham story God tells Abraham to kill for him. Unlike Manson, the Bible god doesn’t want Abraham to murder a stranger but wants him to murder his own and only son, Isaac/Ishmael, as a sacrifice to himself/God. How people who claim to love God can make such repulsive claims about God is beyond reason.
In the Bible story God stops Abraham at the very last second from killing his son. Why? Because God allegedly did not know if Abraham feared God enough to actually go through with the killing. Verse 12 tells us that God (the angel of the LORD) told Abraham at that crucial last second, “Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God.” This is akin to a parent telling their five-year-old child to take a knife and to kill their pet puppy or kitten because the deranged parent wants to see if the child fears them enough to actually do it.
The Bible god is very big on wanting people to fear him. The theme of fearing God goes all the way through both the Old and New Testaments. It even shows that the true foundation of Christianity is not love, but is fear. Why be a Christian? For fear that if you don’t God is going to burn you for eternity in hell. Matthew 10:28 says that Jesus said, “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
History and current events show that Thomas Paine was correct when he wrote in The Age of Reason, The Complete Edition (for Kindle edition click here), “Belief in a cruel god makes a cruel man.” How much cruelty does it take for a parent to tell their little child to kill their pet puppy or kitten? How much more cruelty would it take for God to tell Abraham or anyone else to kill their own child?
One of the great joys of Deism is that it teaches everyone that God has nothing to do with the Bible or Quran! In Deism, Bible stories like this are seen for what they really are: the twisted thinking of ancient control freaks who had no love of God or of their fellow human beings. We need to take action to get the word out about Deism and thereby educate the world to these facts! Not only will this give sincere people peace of mind and help break the hold of the “revealed”/hearsay religions over people and society, but it has the very real potential to save lives. This becomes evident when we reflect on the tragedy of the mother of three, Deanna Laney, who killed two of her little boys by stoning them and permanently and severely handicapped her third son because she thought God wanted her to kill them the way the Bible says God ordered Abraham to kill his only son. After her arrest she said she did it to “prove her complete and unconditional faith in Him/God.” Let’s get to work educating people about Deism NOW! And always remember these words from Thomas Paine and ACT accordingly: “The progress that reason and Deism make in the world lessen the force of superstition, and abate the spirit of persecution.”
