In decades past it wasn’t very hard to choose a new sink because they there generally all the same. The only question was to choose a stainless steel sink with one, two, or three bowls. All that has changed.
Today we have a tremendous selection of kitchen sinks—not only shapes, sizes and types but also a wide range of materials. While stainless steel is still popular because of its low cost and it’s the material of choice for builders, but more and more homeowners are opting for a change. This change may be copper, bronze, brass, granite, marble, ceramic, enameled cast iron, fireclay, acrylic, or vitreous china.
Or something totally new like Fragranite. Franke created Fragranite several years ago. It’s granite that is 50 times more compact than traditional granite making it much harder for stains, bacteria and lime scale to penetrate the granite’s surface. This is one of the more healthy materials you can buy; the other is copper which is naturally anti-bacterial. This material is very durable and is available in many colors. It’s a very good choice.
Copper, bronze and brass sinks are very beautiful and an excellent choice. We are seeing many apron front sinks made from these metals. They are an especially good choice for Traditional, Country or French County and other Old World style kitchens. They are also an excellent choice for more rustic styles and log or timber frame kitchens.
Fireclay is an outstanding material for kitchen sinks. It’s durable, easy to clean, is available in many styles and colors and hand painted styles like Kohler’s Artist Edition collection. Fireclay will last practically forever.
Enameled cast iron is another superb choice and is available in many styles and colors. It will last probably longer than your house.
Acrylic solid surface sinks are just as indestructible as the solid surface countertops and can be used with solid surface for a smooth undisturbed look or with another style of countertop material.
So if you are considering a new sink look beyond stainless steel for something a little different. It may be a little more difficult to choose because you have more options today but its well worth it. Do your homework and look around the Internet at all the great choices you have. Take into account your kitchen style, what things you use your sink for, the color you would like, your own personal taste and make a good informed decision. Then enjoy your beautiful new sink.
