I believe that the first step in the evolution of an attitude shift can only come from serious contemplation and introspection on your career path to date, your current position, the firm you engage with, and of course, reviewing your professional and personal goals, which are likely to change every few years.
It will take a serious attitude shift if you want to become a proactive employee that brings added benefits to your role, professional team, and your firm in general.
Being proactive comes naturally to some of us, while others struggle to gain some control over their environments, particularly in the career arena.
Your work should be a source of pride and self-satisfaction for you, while also challenging you on both a professional and personal level. How you handle these challenges as they arise will make the difference between advancing your career, and remaining at your current level.
You may want to consider the following few questions to help get the ball rolling in the right direction with this exercise:
- On a scale of 1-10 (ten being highest), how happy do you feel when you are performing your job functions?
- How well do you get along with your co-workers, professional staff and group leaders?
- Do you feel a sense of satisfaction at the end of your work day/week, confident that you have performed well?
- What is it about your current role that challenges you?
- Do you feel engaged with your managers and group leaders?
- How often are you asked for, or do you provide feedback on projects and general office discussions that arise?
- Are there some aspects of your job functions in your current role that you find mind numbing or inefficient?
Now for the BIG question:
- If your current position were the only job you could hold over the next three to five years, would you want it, if so why, or why not?
I am sure you see where I am going with this exercise. Please keep in mind that this whole process should be thought-provoking, but fun!
If your response to the above question was yes, what changes would you like to make regarding the ‘job functions’ and ‘scope’ of your position?
If your response to the above question was no, what changes would you propose to make it a better fit for your talents, career goals, and personality profile?
Depending on what your responses were to the questions above, you may have learned that with a few modifications, positive attitude, and a ‘proactive approach’ you can make your role what you think you need to be happy.
The alternate result of course is that you have learned you are simply not in the right job, and nothing would make it more comfortable for you. If that is the case, you need to carry on and follow-through on the outcome of your own thought processes, and responses to these simple, but important queries.
