One way to enrich your child’s education is exposure to the performing arts. Over the winter break, my oldest daughter, who is nine years old, and I saw The Best Christmas Pageant Ever which was playing at the Synetic Theater in Crystal City. The play was directed by Elena Velasco and the cast was comprised of the very talented synetic teen ensemble. Elena has been teaching educational theater for over 15 years and her dedication and guidance to her students was demonstrated by the teens we saw acting on the stage.
The play had an unusual twist to the original Christmas Pageant story, as the Herdman children, who are known to be bullies, decide to participate in the annual church Christmas pageant. The outcome of the Christmas Pageant is unclear, as the Herdman children have bullied their way into being given key roles in the church’s Christmas pageant. The play was 60 minutes long and very entertaining. Along with the audience, my daughter and I, enjoyed the witty humor of the script. The cast was extremely talented and the characters came to life on the stage!
In 2002, the Synetic Theater made it’s first production, a wordless Hamlet. Every year, Synetic Theater produces four to five main stage productions and two to three family productions. There is an educational component to the Synetic Theater by conducting theater classes at their studio for ages 7 through adult. The Synetic theater also conducts community outreach programs and tours family and main stage productions. Synetic Theater has been nominated for 92 Helen Hayes Awards and has received 24 of those prestigious Awards.
“The Synetic Theater’s mission is to be the premier American physical theater, fusing dynamic art forms — such as text, drama, movement, acrobatics, dance and music — by producing world-class theater for all ages, educating the next generation of artists and physical theater professionals, and promoting this distinct form of theater nationally and internationally through community outreach and touring programs.”
This was my first experience seeing a play at the Synetic Theater and I was very impressed by the dynamic cast and creative script. I would highly recommend this gem of a theater, in Crystal City! The Synetic Theater is chock full of talent and is a fun, creative outing, for you and a friend or with your family.
