The editors of Motor Trend magazine named the new 2013 Ram 1500 as their 2013 Truck of the Year today, Dec. 6.
The development of the new 2013 Ram 1500 by Ram brand is a product of their effort to establish their own identity and clearly define their customer since becoming a standalone brand of the Chrysler LLC Group two years ago.
Their creation as a distinct brand enabled Ram to concentrate on how core customers use trucks and what it is they want and need in those trucks. Recognizing that the pickup truck is now both a family and a work vehicle, Ram focused on developing the 2013 Ram 1500 to be both a substantially functional family vehicle as well as a hardworking pickup for commercial use every day.
During that process, the 2013 Ram 1500 became the most anticipated new pickup truck in the U.S. in recent memory.
The debut of this new Ram 1500 marked a significant transition point for Ram in their effort to significantly differentiate themselves from the previous line of Dodge branded trucks in the market.
With the debut of the 2013 Ram 1500, the old Dodge Ram was now dead. All Ram pickups being built and delivered for 2013, would no longer have any reference to Dodge anywhere on the truck in name or anything else for that matter.
“The new Ram 1500 makes a powerful statement about our company and the Ram Truck Brand,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico. “Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year is an amazing honor; truly one of the most prestigious awards an automaker can achieve. It reaffirms the fact that Ram has the best truck on the road today. Bar none.”
Motor Trend editors praised the new 2013 Ram 1500 for its air suspension, choice of engines, variety of trim levels and towing capability.
“We had a small but solid field of contenders for Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year,” said Edward Loh, Editor-in-Chief of Motor Trend. “But in the end, the choice was clear: Ram 1500 not only withstood our rigorous testing, it impressed at every step along the way. Our judges were won over by the performance of Ram 1500’s broad array of standard and optional equipment. It’s a truck that can be tailored to meet most anyone’s needs. For these reasons and more, we’re excited to name the Ram 1500 the Motor Trend 2013 Truck of the Year.”
Motor Trend Truck of the Year contenders are evaluated using six criteria, which includes Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Efficiency, Safety, Value and Performance of Intended Function.
To be eligible, a vehicle must be all-new or have been substantially changed from the previous model.
Ram engineers changed every area of the truck – from a newly designed frame to new engines and transmissions to a new interior with the next-generation Uconnect® access system.
The goal was to create a new pickup with best-in-class ride and handling and best-in-class that delivered unmatched content, performance and capability to truck buyers, both family and commercial or both.
The new 2013 Ram 1500 was recognized in October this year as the Truck of Texas by the Texas Auto Writers Association following their annual Truck Rodeo competition in recognition of the success of that transition that raised the bar for their segment.
Citing all of the reasons pointed out by Motor Trend and using many of the same criterion, the Texas Auto Writers Association awarded their prestigious trophy to Ram in Texas, where fully one in five pickup trucks in the U.S. are sold.
The 2013 Ram 1500 offers buyers best-in-class or first-in-segment 25 MPG fuel efficiency, new technology and new features like the rotary dial gear shift, active air suspension, mobile hotspot connectivity, eight-speed automatic transmission, stop-start system, thermal management system, pulse-width modulation and active aerodynamics with grille shutters.
Equipped with a choice of engines, including the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine or the award-winning Pentastar V-6, the Ram 1500 offers the best power trains in the industry and are known for their reliability.
