Well, it’s that time of the year again. For the most part, the roller derby season is over around the northwest. And every year around this time, Elwood Bruise, the Seattle Roller Derby Examiner, puts together a list of skaters who the masses feel were the best of the best the sport has to offer in our little neck of the woods. This year, Elwood has asked me to help him do things a little differently.
In 2007, Elwood put together his first all-star team with skaters in the Pacific and Mountain time zones. At that point there were maybe 20-30 leagues up and bouting, so honoring skaters in that wide of an area wasn’t all that hard. Then starting in 2008, Elwood limited it to just the northwest (Washington, Oregon and Idaho) since there was a sudden burst in leagues that were actively participating in the sport. It pretty much stayed that way until last year when he opened it up to Montana, Alaska and British Columbia (BC had three skaters crack the lineup last year and Alaska had a couple skaters who barely finished just outside the top-20).
These days there are so many leagues in this area that Elwood has decided to divide the all-star teams into states (and the province) instead of clustering everyone into one group. By doing this, we can both honor more individual skaters while also helping promote more leagues in not only Washington and Oregon, but also Idaho, Montana, British Columbia and Alaska. Elwood has asked me to write about Oregon’s all-stars.
So, for this specific team, you will be voting for skaters in the state of Oregon only. They can be women, men, juniors…as long as they are based in the state of Oregon. The leagues you can choose from are (as listed in order on derbyroster.com):
Shanghaied Roller Dolls
Lava City Roller Dolls (including the junior derby Cinder Kittens)
Renegade Roller Derby of Central Oregon
Coos County Roller Girls
Sick Town Derby Dames
Emerald City Junior Gems
Emerald City Roller Girls
Lane County Concussion
Gorge Roller Girls
Mid-Columbia All Skate
Southern Oregon RollerGirls
Portland Men’s Roller Derby
Rose City Rollers (including the junior derby Rosebuds)
Cherry City Derby Girls
Salem Men’s Roller Derby
Again, you can vote for any skater actively participating in any of these leagues.
HOW TO VOTE (READ CAREFULLY)
Send me a list of 5 skaters you feel should be on the all-star team. Out of those 5 skaters, pick one as your Most Valuable Player.
Please feel free to write a line or two about each skater you choose for the all-star team. Really, it can be as long as you want it to be. Some of these will be added to each individual skater’s article (especially since I don’t get to see some skaters more than once or twice a year). In the past, adding these comments to each article gave a much clearer vision of what makes the skaters, who made the team, special in the eyes of the general roller derby community.
THREE MORE POSITIONS YOU CAN VOTE FOR THIS YEAR
This year, there will also be three more categories you can vote on. Those categories are:
So, send me the names of one person in each of those categories and a sentence or two telling me why you think they deserve to win. The winners will also have an article posted about them as part of the overall series of articles.
So, the things I need from you are:
5 best skaters
1 MVP from that list of 5 skaters you list
You can send me your list at either of the following:

Deadline For Voting
You can vote from now until Friday, December 7th.
The award for Best NSO will be posted on December 8th
The award for Best Referee will be posted on December 9th
The award for Best Coach will be posted on December 10th
The list of six skaters who make the “honorable mention” list will be posted on December 11th.
Then on December 12th, the skaters who made the all-star team roster in positions 14-6 will be posted daily in random order.
On Friday, December 21st the first of the “starting five” (top five vote-getters) will be posted.
On Tuesday, December 25th (Christmas Day), the skater deemed to be the “2012 MVP” will be posted.
So, it’s kind of like the “19 Days of Christmas” if you like to think about how everything relates to Christmas songs.
Subscribe to my articles to have them delivered directly to your inbox, so you won’t miss any of the awards.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding this list! See the links below for the other states/province in the Northwest and how to vote for them.
